Advisable to change colour?
Hi guys,
After some months of car shopping and endless considerations, I finally went out and bought myself a 5MT yesterday, and I will be getting it in 2-3 weeks time (fingers crossed - and now i find myself totally unable to focus on work)
I must say, this is truly a fantastic forum for a newbie car buyer like me. I think that almost every question that I can think of has at some point been answered here (from insurance cost, to trusted workshops, to fuel consumption to PIs to avoid, etc.) That said, I do have one more question...
I bought a silver 5MT, even though silver is not my favourite colour for the RX8, cos its the only manual RX8 that I can get without having to indent one. The PI that i purchased from offered to change the colour now so that when it is registered, it can be registered as the new colour - not as the original silver colour.
My questions are:
1. Should i get them to change the colour? I am concerned about the quality of the paint job done locally. Is this a valid concern?
2. My preferred colour is actually yellow, but since they no longer have yellow RX8s, will this be an issue if i were to sell the car later on?
3. If I decide to change the colour later on, and the car is registered as silver, will this affect the resale value?
Hope these questions dont seem too strange.. Thanks very much in advance!

respray
i was at a paint shop recently and saw a grey RX8 change color to white because the customer didnt want to wait for a white one. i must say it was quite a good job done. I couldnt tell it was repainted unless you go up close looking for signs.
Ultimately its up to you. but why not drive for a year and then change. its quite wastefully to not enjoy the factory paint for a while. The paint shop said the same thing. saying that people have too much money to burn like that. But its business to them so they do it. and its easier too. since they dont have to putty up dents and such.

My questions are:
1. Should i get them to change the colour? I am concerned about the quality of the paint job done locally. Is this a valid concern? - if u r changing color, it will make sense to go to a realiable and skillful painter. remember, u will be driving ur 8 for at least a while rite?
2. My preferred colour is actually yellow, but since they no longer have yellow RX8s, will this be an issue if i were to sell the car later on?- technology is so advance now tat we can sent our cars for full checks to see if it is an accident car anytime. As long as u can prove tat ur 8 has not been into serious accident(s) before, there is no reason to worry on this issue.
3. If I decide to change the colour later on, and the car is registered as silver, will this affect the resale value? - not at all.....next buyer is more interested in the technical and electronical conditions than e color change. If someone were to discount based on e color, it is definitely a lame excuse......
Hope these questions dont seem too strange.. Thanks very much in advance!

One thing to take note of: a proper respraying of the RX8 will require it to be disassembled (in particular, the doors) to ensure that all exterior and inner sides are properly painted. Its not an easy job so do ensure that the workshop respraying the car knows what they're doing.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Very much appreciated... Ok then... will go with the stock silver and get my 8 a few days earlier!
Actually after looking at pics of the silver 8 a few more times, its already starting to grow on me.. Thanks again!
Now the next step is the painful waiting period...

Totally emphatise with you about the wait...I struggled to keep focus at work too when I was waiting for mine...but you won't be disappointed when your new car is ready for collection! Hope you get it soon and all the best.
Cheers

Wow!! Would be nice if there are pics of this pink ride...sighted what I suspect was a phantom blue 8 myself on the PIE towards CTE last friday afternoon...haven't seen that colour on an actual car until then, only seen pics of it online...it looked different in the sunlight and while in motion, almost turqoise.

Stormy blue getting too common!
May I suggest a lovely shade of candy apple?

Nah...won't respray my ride...love stormy blue, have gotten many compliments about it (and of course, cliched comparisons with the x-men car). When I was talking to the dealer over the phone enquiring about the car I thought it was winning blue cuz their explanation wasn't precise enough and sought a respray. But when I went down to the showroom, I fell in love with it immediately.
But even if I hypothetically did respray it - lets say, candy apple - and tried to sell it off subsequently, think I would try to raise the selling price by just a leeeeetle leeeetle bit but throw in a 'complimentary' inspection by AA or some reputable workshop certifying its been accident free.

I would wait. Who knows, it might grow on you. It doesn't make sense to me to get it and then paint it straight away. That money could go elsewhere. Just my 02 cents.

in the end, i decided not to respray - the more i looked at it, the better i like it... also thought that if i do decide later on to change the color, it'll almost be like getting a new car
if all goes well, i'll be a proud new 8 owner before 8 Dec! thanks again for all the advice and suggestions!

Strength in diversity.. It's good that the owner of the pink 8 dares to be different. As for my ride, it's on my avatar.

Try not to respray... several disadvantages...
1) As someone mentioned, the next owner will question you...
2) You have to inform ROV.
3) I heard that exporting the car will be more problematic if the colour is different from the one indicated on the car chassis.
4) Respray jobs are seldom as neat or as good as the factory ones... sometimes you find out after a couple of years...
5) If you change colours, they will have to strip out the rubber trims and the engine for a complete coverage of the new colours. God knows if they put back everything neatly and tightly (more likely that something might be rattling after that).
I drive a silver RX8... it's the colour that you can get away most if you're lazy!

How long are you prepared to wait? I've heard of people who have been told to lay up (SG term) their cars just for a good spray job. Might not be a problem for loaded folks with many other exotic cars in their stable, but not really feasible for the average person who uses their 8 as a daily driver.
