Back to topic.
As to un-smooth changes. I think its normal to some extent. I have been driving autos for many years now and i realise its inherent in all cars. Whether its a jap or continental car. Fyi, the thud is even more obvious in some mercedes models.
But i had a real problem once; a auto trans nearly failed on me. I sold one of my old car, an auto CVT civic ek model to a dealer. The dealer came back a week later and said the transmission failed and a replacement costs at least $7k.
Previously i did notice some eractic shifting and violent down and upshifts in that car. My civic was quite modified and CVT trans do not take well to too much increase in power.

mine's 5AT...4 drive plus 1 reverse.
turbo not my cup of tea...prefer supercharged though
Anyway with my auto, if i'm gentle on the gas when it's supposed to shift down, i dun get the "thunk" sound or jerk. Else, I just use the stick or paddle to shift.
