Not so much driving the hell out of it as opposed to not being used to it. countless times i can't even get the clutch biting point correctly. Think i wasted lots of fuel from that alone.

My 8's a second hand and has 5500km on it so i assume no longer need to run it in?

Now i'm really starting to worry that something's really wrong with my fc. I'm like doing only half of your 520km. Anyways, pumped 56l of 98 two days ago and now at the 3 quarter mark having done only 50+km. I suspect I'm going to achieve roughly the same fc again...

hi winn, noticed you said that your max was only 420km. What petrol do you pump and what was the lowest mileage you got from full tank?

btw, out of curiosity, how often on average do you guys change/top up the engine oil? every 5000km or less?

I am only on my third tank even though I have got the car for 1 month. haha..

1st tank was 381km and pumped back 54L but i figured out that because it wasn't really a full tank to start with.

2nd tank was 418km and pumed back 52L.

now on the 3rd tank. mileage looked pretty low. i have used up more than hald a tank and mileage is only 200+ odd km..

yeah you prob hit 350-380. second half of the tank is typically less than 200km.

Actually, thats not the best I've ever done lah...best I ever got was 583km wif ard
3 litres of petrol left in the tank...

But its very fustrating when u c sunnys, civics, lancers n even toyota liteace zoom
past u lah...

I dun suppose that there is anything wrong wif ur car lah...a lot of members here
got different results when it comes to fc...

If u do want better fc, I did a search on the forum n found that if u drive ur car
below the 3500rpm mark (thats abt 111km/h in 6th gear), u would get better fc
because the secondary port of the engine is not open n thus saving fuel or
something like that lah...

R u doing a lot of city driving? On my previous ride, i get approx 10.5km/litre when i used to stay in jurong west hence 90% of the time i'm on expressway be it to work or to town. The moment i moved to town area, despite the same ride n driving style, my fc dropped to 8.5km/litre as i'm almost 95% city driving.

My 8 is giving me approx 6km/litre which i'd think it's reasonable as i should be doing perhaps 8km/litre which is about the norm that fellow drivers r getting.

Gee, i am only doing 320 - 350 km per tank. Think it has something to do with my 18' wheel and the PSI.

Current front on 34 PSi and Rear on 30 PSi.

Anyone got any advice?

Haha.. ok. Realise that I was too kiasu liao . Bought spare from MM and keeping it in the boot cos I went to Shell and noticed that they didn't sell minerals - only have syn or semi-syn.

In general I try to drive change gears around the 3k mark but sometimes not enough discipline...

Anyway, just got informed by a friend that I really need to change my bad driving habits cos I usually engage half clutch all the way when going up those circular steep car parks.

Btw, noticed something strange just now - when I released the clutch, there's a loud sound coming from underneath the hood and i tried it a few times and the sound kept re-occuring. It sounded like "thack" whenever i release the clutch pedal. I tried it again later when the car was much cooler and the sound disappeared.

Yeah, doing mostly city driving cos I travel by nicoll highway to get to city area.. Based on my calculations, my first tank was doing like 5km/litre

Conserve momentum when driving. Plan a few steps ahead, look for holes to slot into in traffic, anticipate traffic light changes, gradient, etc. Excessive unnecessary braking wastes momentum and fuel. So does excessive unnecessary acceleration, like when you lose too much speed at an uphill section due to poor planning.

Don't forget to use 6th gear early, as I find that usually, after the initial quick acceleration, you have to ease off the pedal to match speeds with traffic ahead of you. Some guys remain in lower gear for too long just to maintain speed. This car has enough hp at 6th above 50km/h on flat ground to accelerate and keep up with most other vehicles. Eg, when filtering onto a road, I normally do 1st-2nd-3rd-6th, as after 3rd I'm already at 80km/h or so, revving to 5k at most. 1st-2nd-4th-6th is a pattern I use a lot too.

A lot of guys I drive behind always brake when getting to a gentle bend in the road, then accelerate away at the exit after slowing down too much. The worst thing is, I am also forced to brake. Seriously, at 70km/h, your chances of sliding off a gradually bending dry road in Singapore is very remote, even with a liteace. Steer gradually and smoothly, load up the suspension smoothly, and passenger comfort is not compromised.

A soft 'Thunk' sound is normal for the clutch, but for me I can only hear it when the engine is off (when it is quiet enough). It's louder if you release the clutch suddenly.

Practise increasing the speed of your gear change..it's a good way to compensate for accelerating more slowly due to less revving. Just make sure you shift accurately, or you'll wear out your syncromesh.

FC right now hovering at abt 8.2 km/l, cos of 75% city driving recently, itchy right foot, and being a noob at double-clutching.

I know a few guys who hardly hit 300litres in their rx8

As for me, its 450litres minimum, with my stock 4AT
sometimes I drives without aircon, not too sure whether its true, but I've heard people saying that it does help on minimising the petrol consumption

mLynn.... you mean 450km, right? ;-) As for myself, the fc is around 420km for 54L petrol...

I watched an episode of Mythbusters where they proved that driving around with the aircon off and the windows down is better for FC than with the aircon on and the windows up.

...or was it the other way around?

I've tracked the last 30,000 miles on my car and I average 17.6 mpg. This is a mix of city / highway with PLENTY of agressive street driving.

Just to share my personal experience

got my 8 about 3 months ago. now about 5k+ into my mileage.

previously, my fuel consumption was like 6km/l thereabout. Terrible. the worse was 5.840km/l on Shell 98, which means less than 300km on a full tank. Mostly city driving with aircon.

had a sudden change in fuel consumption recently. the past few tanks mostly highway driving on Shell 95 and I even got my highest fc at 9.766 km/l on my last tank . not sure if the mileage had anything to do with this..

that's some hope for those who just bought their 8 and started with bad fc

Hi guys,

Recently purchased the ScangaugeII with the purpose of monitoring FC, my findings as follows:

In the 1st 10-15 mins of ur trip, the FC is BAD, can go as high as 35L/100km (ranging from 25-35L/100km). Pls note that I have remote start and my car is sufficiently warmed out when I reach my car.
This may explain y our FC is so bad when u do a lot of city driving.

After which the reading will gradually drop to abt 14-17L/100km, which is my norm. Also to note that I have tons of ICE behind and I dun drive like Miss Daisy.

Lastly, if u go on night cruises, I can get 9-11L/100km with windows/sunroof open as well as my ICE blasting away.

Another thing I found out is that when u start to rev after the FC has stablised, it will remain abt that level. Eg. abt half an hour back when reading is abt 11L/100km, i started to "play" with a Forester for a couple of mins, redlining all the way, FC only dropped to 12-12.5L/100km. But when u play when the reading is abt 25L/100km, the petrol station is waiting

FYI: I drive a MM 6MT. Frankly, I think the Scangauge is the best investment I've made for my car thus far Before u think I have any commercial interest in this, I do not. Frankly, the person whom I bought the gadget from needs a little more work in his approach, more like a "ai lai mai sua" attitude plus his technical knowledge is even worse den mine

The readings make sense. I suspect that my fc got better due to the longer distance travelled. And by the way, one strange thing is that the aircon does not seem to affect my fc much, which doesn't make sense..

Scangauge sounds like a good investment. May get one soon
