Help! RX8 or not?

Hi to all brudders,

please educate and enlighten.

Im seriously considering to buy the '8'...the urge came all the way from 2 months back, since then, I've been trying to acquire information about it. Hopefully you guys can answer some of my question (which may sound stupid to you)

1) How many models are there available in singapore? What are they? Price range?
( Well, some are auto, some are manual with 5 speed, some are 6 speed, some are JDM...kaoz...im really confused..so are those available from PI auto only? Then where does the JDM 6 spd come from? MM brings in the 6 speed too, issit JDM as well? Finally, whats the performance and price difference in them? Currently, i've only spoke to one PI who are selling the auto)

2) I've heard some reviews about the heating and vibration problem, has anyone experienced and have it resolved yet? I've also heard that the Renesis drinks engine oil as well, every now and then, if you check your engine oil, its actually reducing..can anyone confirm this?

3) Lastly, whats the expected fuel consumption like? I heard the '8' has got a big appetite for petrol...anyone can shed some light?

* Have seen this silver 8 thats registered late 2003, already has got 2 owners. 2 Owners in 1.5 yr!..is the car really that problematic?

* Frankly, i love the 8..hope to hear from you guys soon!!

Regards

i am not sure what caught my attention to this thread as i never check the far east post... but anyways....

I can help witha couple of the questions.
as for here in the states there are only two types of trannys. that is the 6 speed and the automatic. the 6 speed comes witht he 238 H.P. 6 port engine, and the automatic comes with the~190 H.P. 4 port engine.
there are other models but the only differances are options. as far as engines and trannys, these are the only two. i do not know much about other countrys though.

as for over heating... i have never had this problem and its been 109 here latley. i do notice the fans running more, but i do not notice the temp going to high. i have NOT had any vibrations. and YES it does consume some engine oil. the amount of oil depends on how hard you drive your car. but its not all that bad.

fuel milage is also not to great. also depending on how hard you drive it. i have gotten as low as 13 miles per gallon, and as much as 23 miles per gallon. it really does depend on how hard you like to drive.

I hope i have cleared some up for you.
it truly is a fun car to own, it does have its down falls, but for MOST people it is well worth it! the down falls are not all that major.

Basically 3 models:
1) 6spd manual
2) 5spd manual
3) Auto (cant remember is it 4 or 5 spd) with paddle shift.
4) Shinka 6spd-Special edition(only 3 (i think) in singapore hard to get yr hand on one)

PI brought in the car into singapore 1.5yr earlier than MM. Thus the present of JDM. So since MM starts bringing in the 6spd m (only model) and price them at a very competitive price ($135K+-now but lower OMV than PI.) the PI stops bringing the manual in. And only brings in the Auto since MM dont. Now the auto goes as low as $100k(could be quite basic model) eg, no leather, or OEM eq like CDplayer. You'll have to call to check the diff between wat each PI offers.

It only happen on ramdon cars. Any new car in the market would be the same. Right down to your typical family sedan. Luck plays a big part here....Yes, rotary drinks engine oil, not just the renesis(name for the present rotary) just top off, no big issue here.

This topic has been discussed before I'll just give you a rough idea, you can search of the thread to find out more.
5km/l - 8km/l. Yup! That's the range! its pretty big gap. Again from car to car... and depend on how heavy footed you are. Think of it as a sports car. Almost all sports car drinks.

One thing you'll have to bare in mind, the most unique part of the 8 is not the looks, not the doors... its the engine! a engine like no others... thus it does require a little TLC. If you'r one of those who dont like hassels, then this car aint for you. it drinks cos its a sports car, it consume engine oil cos its rotary, and oil change every 5k is almost a must!
Think its easier YOU tell us, wat roughly you lookin at, then its easier for us to advise you wat to get and look out for. Like are you thinkin manual or auto? and its more worth while to get a new car rather than 2nd hand....etc etc

wat say you....

Well well....thats really good information!...i didnt know about all this. Thanks for the information!

I see, well, as oppose to your last paragraph...yah, i think its really quite a hassle. I mean, i can live with the 5k servicing..but, toping off with engine oil every now and then can be troublesome.

This topic has been discussed before I'll just give you a rough idea, you can search of the thread to find out more.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, it quite a killer. But you're probably right, it 'IS' a sports car, to me of cuz!! No car in the present market can beat the looks,i must say. Well, it not the fuel consumption thats the major factor though.

One thing you'll have to bare in mind, the most unique part of the 8 is not the looks, not the doors... its the engine! a engine like no others... thus it does require a little TLC. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well bro, like i've said earlier, i'm actually fine with 5k servicing, the fuel consumption and stuff. But having to top up engine oil can really be a hassle. I'm currently driving a Rav4. Had realised that its probably a wrong buy. Probably think the car dun suit me that well. Similarly, I've had problems once, I'm talking about vibration when the cars put to 'D'. It was cleared with an engine mount changed. My previous ride oso had the same problem, thus, im pretty sensitive about engine vibrations...umm..phobia maybe.

My initial preference was with the manual, but realise that i may not have a bigger pocket then some may have here (joking)....thus, economically, i'd go for the autos which are placed much lower than the former. But then again, the power may be an issue, thus, i'm kinda like keeping my options open again. Of cuz, i'd go for a brand new car....but once again, i'm limited by my pocket size.

Well...all I can say, i love the car!! Envious that you guys do drive one. But I'm not into getting the car and shave a third of my monthly income on a ride, with extra attention and uncertainty in its durability. Thus, i'd really love the comments and advice from you guys (owners)

Thanks for the advice bro!!

Cheers!!

Some good man with very good knowledge should write up a small thread/page regarding different models of Rx8 and post it to the moderator and make it a Sticky Thread.

So all the new members could benefit from it.

HI, let me try to answer ur queries.....

Im seriously considering to buy the '8'...the urge came all the way from 2 months back, since then, I've been trying to acquire information about it. Hopefully you guys can answer some of my question (which may sound stupid to you)

No questions are stupid. U got questions, juz ask and arrange to come for the meetups. Like i said, got 8, no 8, next time gg to have 8, or last time had 8, all welcome. PM ME. MY INBOX IS CLEARED NOW.... paiseh

I tink bro Mster has given a vivid answer on this.. thus i shall skip this question.

2) I've heard some reviews about the heating and vibration problem, has anyone experienced and have it resolved yet? I've also heard that the Renesis drinks engine oil as well, every now and then, if you check your engine oil, its actually reducing..can anyone confirm this?

Heating : Rotary engines are hotter than all other engines. I dun tink heating is a big problem though and its not as bad as how many said it is. It appears bad cos switching over from piston engine therefore not used to it. But this is not a major issue, dun worry.

Vibrating problem : Most of the guys say its the engine mount. I do not noe how bad is bad. I need to sit in a real bad one to noe how a bad vibration will feel. So far, the vibration is my car is hardly unbearable though.... mine is a 6mths old ride.

Engine oil: Yes, the renesis drinks oil BUT it is, again, not as bad as u perceived to be. Even though u decide not to top up the engine oil, i'm sure by the time 5k servicing, it wld still have enough for the renesis to drink. This worry is definitely unfounded. Topping up is just a security for us typical kiasu singaporeans. Must be full everytime. :D

3) Lastly, whats the expected fuel consumption like? I heard the '8' has got a big appetite for petrol...anyone can shed some light?

Petrol consumption : Driving a sports car + paying for a 1.3 road tax. I tink its quite fair lah, the figures given by the guys earlier. i'm getting like 380km per 56litres, which equates to less than 7km/l. But FC depends on the routes u used, how u drive and many factors. But 6km/l to 8km/l shld be a safe estimate.

* Have seen this silver 8 thats registered late 2003, already has got 2 owners. 2 Owners in 1.5 yr!..is the car really that problematic?

Yes this car is a big problem, becos babes got attracted by it. And this may just be the only problem as yet. There are no major mechanical and electrical problem, so again, dun hear say from others who have not driven the car before. Hear it frm the men themselves!! The few reasons i can tink of y the car change hands quickly are becos:

1. got into an accident before
2. too expensive to maintain due to many poisons for the car
3. impractical to ferry family members ard
4. FC
5. Auto no power, must get 6MT
6. too much babes to handle

Of cos, all the above are my humble opinions and may not represent the rest of the rx8 owners..... anyway pm me ur contact. my mail is cleared. too much queries lah recently... :D

highly reccommended. Most MM cars are using shell helix 20W50.

Most PI cars are using TRUST RE oil.

But take note, I have a shipment of KNIGHT SPORTS SYNTHETIC rotary oil specially for our rx8s and 7s, coming in next month. Those interested to use synthetic oil specially for our rotary babies, let me noe. Even if it is synthetic, recommended is 5k to 8k change, depnding on how u whack ur car.

my 2 cents, if u want the car for the looks and not too shady power - by all means get it.

Personally, im quite disappointed with it...mainly due to the ECU being a tuff nut to crack...
And the high oil n water temp problems on Track...If u want lots of modification options and room for improvement on power - Don't get this car!

If you think it is too sexy to handle Slap ur d/p tomorrow and wait for the keys :P

I see, thats good! Well, i've heard lotsa speculations about its performance, thus, i had my doubts!! Thanks for clearing!!

Cheers Bro!!

Hi again! One small point - auto can be very heavy on consumption depending on how u drive:
Best record (u know who u r :D ) 400+km on full tank
Even better-than-best (guess ) 200km on full tank

Talk about variance! :p
