Mobile Speed Cameras

Asked to see picture and they said must write appeal letter, so I wrote one on the spot (they have a form for this). They will send me official summons and fix appt to view pic, cannot view on the spot. Viewing pic is FOC, but if you want one mailed to you, it costs $54.
Bottomline, if you kena something like this, write appeal letter together with submission of driver details by mail to save a trip down to TP. Wait for summons and go have a look at picture.
I'm skeptical about the acquisition of my car by the camera if they said I was going so fast. The officer said that with this new tech, they can zero in on a specific car instead of a group of cars. I'll have to see the pic to believe it.
I think they're just picking on sports cars. Why can't they go after the lorries that drive at 90kmh which is 40 over the limit? Have you guys seen how dangerous those are? Especially when the trucks they use to move earth from construction sites are empty. Those are definitely more dangerous as they aren't designed for speed!

Seen picture. Quite a nice one I must say. However, managed to cham siong with the officer to 6 points and $150. He even gave me a few hints on how the new mobile cameras work.
Apparently, they hide out on overhead bridges. The put the camera near the 4.5m sign on the bridge, then run the cables to the corner where the stairs are and the cop sits there out of sight so you cannot see him from the road.
The camera is focussed on one lane only and they can only get you if the picture is of the car. The shot is very tight - whole picture was of the bonnet and bumper. He said if the pic only captures half the car or even if it captures part of the windshield or road, then they cannot use it for a ticket.
The camera is also set to snap any car that exceeds a certain pre-set speed, and he gave me the impression that this pre-set speed is over 100.
So, to defeat the camera, you can:
1. Straddle lanes like the taxi drivers we love to hate
2. Drive below 100
3. Drive so fast that the camera cannot focus in time to get a clear shot of your car.
Incidentally, I was caught at PIE 20km mark towards Jurong. The mobile camera must have been on the Adam Road flyover.

RX-8ster, thanks for the update. All three times that I've seen our boys in blue with the mobile speed camera, they were on pedestrain overhead bridges overlooking normal roads (not expressways). They were standing at the camera and seemed to be operating it manually instead of setting it on auto and then go R.O.C. at the stairs.
Anyway, the photo of your speeding car was taken from the front, correct? Was it during the day or night? Did you see a flash when the photo was taken? Was the photo like a normal colour photo or taken in infra-red (like black and white)? In Australia, the speed cameras there photograph you from the front and flash you in the face! Needless to say, it is quite shocking to get flashed in the face while driving.

I think the pre-set detection speed should be 20 to 25 km/h above the road's speed limit. If they set it to +20 km/h, they will basically be taking photos of everyone on lane 1. In addition, they will also need to make some buffer for equipment accuracy.
Dun think they r too keen to catch those within +20 km/h of speed limit.

I agree with you that they probably aren't too interested to catch marginal speeding offence because of equipment inaccuracies and maybe also because the fine $ amount is small. Besides, if they catch small speed infractions like in Australia, it would seriously **** of a LOT of people. Once, I received a $50 speeding ticket in Australia for 7km/h over the limit! Bloody ridiculous...
But at the end of the day, what you said about 20 to 25 km/h over the limit is just speculation. I'd like to know for sure. If anyone knows... pls share.

mate was radar 35 km/h above the limit along mandai but not pictures.
so he disputed, claming could be other cars running abeam...abreast you named it he said them all.
darned he was driving an evo 7 so he can't quite dished a convincing story....
long story short, he refused to plea guilty and is now awaiting court session....
the judge will decide his fate and he's gonna f.....king take the chance.
you tell me wat's the odds!!!!

Radar is fairly inaccurate at picking out a particular car in a group of traffic, so whether it was really him or some other car depends on how heavy was the traffic at that time. However, I doubt traffic along Mandai would be THAT heavy but I could be wrong. Getting picked on for speeding or dangerous driving is an inherent risk of driving a sports car. Our cars look fast even standing still Maybe if his Evo 7 is totally stock and he has a totally clean driving record, he might have some ammunition to bring along to court.
But at the end of the day, it's not really about the technical possiblities, it's what the court judge thinks. If that fella is a technical idiot, then so much for technicalities. Then there is also the "karma" effect. If your friend was really speeding at 35km/h above the speed limit and just trying to get away with it, his body language will show it in court. But if he is really innocent, is he willing to bring in expert witnesses to prove it?

Just like our CJ said. What are the odds if one appeal in court. It is virtually 0% chance you will win.
Same here, EVO7 is a high performance car and Mandai Road quite an empty stretch of road. Who will the judge give a benefit of a doubt..of cause the long arm of the law. As the police is impartial unless he can prove that the policeman is his personal enemy.
On hind side, he should just take the fall and pay the fine. Usually up to judge level, the fine will thousands of dollars and he risk being banned.

bro,
Be careful when traveling along woodlands ave 12 & gambas ave. TP ops quite frequently lately. One crown in blue will sit beside the road pavement with the radar, & about 1km down the road will be a road block.

Actually, I'm surprised they still use radar when they have the new infra red detectors. I suppose they're making the most of them and then using the fines to upgrade their equipement.

New hot place. The flyover at Serangoon road leading to hougang/punggol. If you wanna speed, use the normal route(old) from the bottom. More lights but no police.

Yeah... just a reminder, that stretch is 50km/h coz there is no posted speed limit. I always have to drive on the left lane there else there will always be cars charging up my ***. Most people seem to think it's an "expressway"...

Yep... I was at the right lane at 70+ and some idiot horn me. In the end I let him passed and saw him stationary at the bottom with cops.
Recently there are many many tps around. Just be careful and lie low....

I also received a summon at PIE towards Tuas at 17 km and face the same speed as RX-ster, 80kmph exceed 31-40kmph, but you are lucky, you manage to have a reduction. I have to pay $170 and get 8 point. From what I guess, I was caught at the overhead bridge near kallang bahru. My date of offence is on 25 Jun 2004 at approx 5.20pm
