paint protection film
Hi,
I read recently about the use of paint protection film for cars and its effectiveness.
Any users out there ?
Given the low slung nature of the RX8 maybe it would be good idea against
flying stones, scratches etc.......

Thanks for the response, but i guess car polishing and a paint protection film
works a bit differently, the film is actually like a shrink wrap which they actually
lay on top of the vehicle surface and is supposed to be resilient to stone chip ,
scratches etc....... whereas polishing treats the actual surface of the vehicle.
Cost wise is also very different, with ppf packges from $1200/- upwards.
Anybody has use the paint protection film?

Ag's amazing glaze. Cost me about $380. Recurrent cost is $120 annually. If your car is black, probably another re-treatment every 2 years.

PPS is those once or twice a yr polish but take it with a pinch of salt... regular maintenance on ur paintwork beats those PPS anytime...

Whether it's the clear coat, or another coating on top of it, they both will abrade and scatter light from microscopic scratches, dulling the appearance of your paint.
AG is definitely not as hard as sapphire glass, so it will also degrade. In fact, researchers are going the way of plastic (the property, not the material) paints that slowly deform and 'flow' back over micro-scratches.
The bottom line is, is your coating (including clear bra) going to scratch like clear-coat? If so, the appearance is going to degrade anyway. You only have the knowledge that your paint underneath is still intact, with no visible payoff. If maintaining the coating is gonna cost as much as a clear coat, might as well re-spray clear coat after a couple of years.
That's why ppl still put in the elbow grease regularly, cos the micro-scratches have to be removed regularly to maintain appearance.

Wow, judging from the response to the thread, we sure have many opinions about the so call " latest nano technology" but more importantly a lot of sensible people out there !
I have learnt a lot and i think will have to look at both sides of the coin very carefully.
Thanks guys!
