Real live experiment.
I just put some Wedsports in at 8.5" +32. Extra 24mm extension to the outside from stock. It does seems to be very close to the rear fender. I lowered my car and I think it is rubbing - although it is just a knocking noise and seems to be on the right side. So far so good - no rubbing noise on the front.

The slicks are heavier in thread steel than the casted wheel nowadays.
