Really interesting this thread. On a similar subject on the main board I posted the following last week - a US guy was asking about AT vs MT.

I have had a 4AT for one year, wonderful car. I bought the AT because I live in a big city and get into traffic jams. I have owned and driven manuals for 30 years. If I did not live in a city I would have bought the manual, absolutely no question. The AT is still great when I can get it onto a quiet open road.
90% of the time I drive using the paddles, it is really very good, no lag, loads of go.
When I am in a traffic jam or on the phone (oops) I use the Auto, perfect.
The ONLY issue I realy have with the Auto is that it can be difficult to downshift from 2 to 1, sometimes the computer just doesn't want to do it and you have to time it just right to power out of a 'slow' corner.
Buy the one which suits your requirements. Certainly do not be afraid of manual though!!

With all the tests you guys have done, have you got speed comparisons between AT and MT accelerating up from rolling at from say 50kph to 140? In this range the AT only changes once ( 1 to 2) and is always in the power zone, and you are guaranteed a good change! With MT you might need an extra change and human inefficiency comes into effect.
Those speeds are are the area you really want the acceleration when overtaking traffic on the Mersing road!
I'm sure MT will still be quicker because of more power, but I wonder how close it is? The big problem on launch with the AT is the time it takes to get to the power zone from rest.

Other issues with the AT I now realise :-
(1) speed limiter at 185 kph fitted in Japan
(2) regular replacement of engine mounts needed, or it shakes too much when stopped and in gear (every 20k km)

We have never specifically measured 50-140 times for ATs and MTs. However, are you interested in all out performance figures or realistic performance figures?

For all out performance, both AT and MT would be in 1st gear and accelerate to 140. ATs might only need 1 gear shift (not sure of the top speed in 2nd gear) and MTs would need 2 gear shifts but I think the MTs would benefit from being "in the power zone" more than the ATs having to drag all the way to 140 in 2nd gear. For realistic performance, both AT and MT would be in their respective cruising gear at 50kmh, drop gear and accelerate to 140 with all the associated gear shifts.

Thanks sqflyer
The AT can reach 140 in 2nd.
I just thought that this would be a better comparitor between AT and MT, and might make me feel a bit better about having bought the AT!
For the 'average' driver I guess that 50-140 is the most useful indicator. I agree the AT up to 50 does only crawl (relatively to MT!) but I think it otherwise distorts the excellent performance of the AT.
