Tire Sizing for 18x8.5

Hello people

Sorry for so many questions - just one last one.

Would like to know what tire size I should get for an 18x8.5 rim. Can i use 225/45/18 or would it look like the rims are too big for the tire? Hopefully, I can get some rubber to act as rim protector.

Would appreciate if members who are running 18x8.5 can give me some feedback. Better still, post some pictures of 18x8.5 rims running on 225/45/18 or other tire profiles.

If you would prefer lecturing me over the phone please do give me a call. Thanks in advance!!

I'm using the same 235/40/18 tire size as tan280. IMHO, 225 can fit the 8.5" rims but it's stretching the rubber a bit and that's not good. Besides, there is little to no "rim protector" to speak of using 225s.

I'm usin 235/40s as well..

Was just wondering cause I'm due to change my tyres soon. The 18 x 8.5 rims should still fit 245 tyres right? or will there be too much rubber?

Any major down side to putting 245's all round or has anyone tried combination of 235s front and 245s rear?

Thanks for the replies people..

I'm getting TE37s.

The following calculations are based on comparisons to stock rim size of 225/55/16

Thought of using 235/40/18 but based on calculations, the speedo reading, which affects odometer, would be about -1.3% off. Meaning, if speedo shows 100kmph, actual speed is about 98.7kmph.

Using 245/40/18 would result in only about -0.1% off. But the concern is if it becomes too wide and makes it difficult to u-turn, rub fender (depending on offset) and most importantly, adversely affect fuel economy.

Any thoughts?

dun bother too much with the speedo reading. there is a diff but it isn't that great also. besides it stops you from getting speeding tickets as it reads higher.

235/40/18 having a lower side wall will give a sharper turn in.

take a look at www.advan.com you will see that for 225/45/18 stock tires the recommended width is 7.5in but we are using 8in. this stretches the tires a bit to give a sharper steering, as the side walls are more 'propped' up with the wider rim width.
So with 8.5 and 245/40/18, you might lose some of the crisp handling?(not sure)

lots of people around here run 245 width tires on the stock 8" wheels.

for 8.5" wheels i would say go at least that wide if not 255. unless you are tracking the car you are not going to notice the difference in turn in. and if you are tracking the car you know you would rather have the extra rubber on the ground. Properly offset I have experience with 275/35/18s fitting under the car with stock fenders and no rubbing, rolling or cutting on ALL 4 corners.
