'06 STI vs. Evo IX MR Round 2

For the previous thread (Round 1), once again EVO re-establishes it's dominance

From Road and Track-
A victor in this rivalry is not easily determined. It really depends on what you as a driver want from your car. In my opinion, there is no car that will love you more than an Evo will. As a road warrior, its sharpness, directness, and aggressive yet forgiving nature leave the STI no choice but to step aside. One thing remains a given — compare the capabilities of this pair along with their costs, and there simply is no other competition.

My Words-
Regardless, the EVO IX is turning out to be absolutely the best EVO platform of all time. Yes it just went on sell, and yes very few have been tested, but it didn't take long for the EVO IX to break records. Previous stock USDM EVO 1/4 Mile record of 12.9@105MPH, broken by one of the first EVO IX owners to race at the drag strip, 12.8@106MPH. That time was backed up by another EVO IX running 12.9@105MPH, and another running 13.0@106MPH. Not only has it impressed in stock form, but the tuning potential thus far of this car has been absolutely amazing. So far EVO IX owners with the simplest of bolt on modifications have made absolutely amazing gains. Flash, Cat-Back or Turbo-Back Exhaust, and Intake is on average making 60-80WHP gains on these cars. MBC and you can bump the number to 80-100WHP.

I still wouldn't touch a Mitsu. And EVOs aren't available in Canada, while STIs are...

Mistubishi might be in some financial troubles but it is far from catastrophic. The better car for performance and looks(imo) is the evo. The sti would be the better daily driver car.

This was in R&T before the Motortrend article. If I remember correctly it wasn't really a full comparo but just a one page snipet.

This is slowly becoming an Evo forum. Hehe.

About those 1/4 mile times...how many of those clips were done on 92 or 91 octane? When the first stock IX owner on EvoM posted a 12 second time slip he failed to mention it was on race gas. When he mentioned it later on he got flamed. I'm all for fast Evos off the showroom floor, but running race gas is not "stock" in my opinion. The fastest Evo IX time I've seen running pump gas was some guy's '06 RS running 13.1 at 105mph. That's still insanely fast for a $28k car, but it's not a 12 second clip.

Thanks for clearing that up Steiner. I swear, beating mag times is like the new street racing, lots of BS stories and details left out...

I'm not implying that the original poster if purposely trying to mislead us, it's just hard to know for sure what people are REALLY running when all you have is a timeslip and screen name. Evo owners WANT to believe they drive a 12 second car off the showroom floor, so when somebody posts something to support that it feels better to celebrate the news than scrutinize he details.

"Some financial troubles" is an understatement. The whole Mitsubishi Group of Companies is in the cesspit, and Mitsubishi Motors is in it deepest. The once mighty Mitsubishi Motors is actually being outsold by Mazda, which is a company that is smaller in terms of production capacity and share equity. The plain fact is that there are not enough people who want to buy their cars, thanks to the quality-related scandals which rocked the company recently.

Evo sales will not be able to sustain the company in the long term either. It's family cars like the Lancer that should sustain Mitsubishi, but the Mazda 6, Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic are eating the Lancer alive in terms of sales figures.

To summarize, the Japanese public has already lost confidence in the cars that Mitsubishi produces. Sure, the Evos may be a formidable weapon on the tracks, but I doubt Mitsubishi Motors will be around to service the Evo's warranties in a few years' time.

And here are my sources. See for yourselves and tell me if Mitsubishi, and by association, the Lancer Evolution, has a future. Performance numbers mean nothing when the company itself is going bust.

http://investmentsmagazine.com/Manag...?C=120&A=15965 <----- Latest news.

http://www.thecarconnection.com/Indu...175.A7802.html <------ This one is a bit old, but still very applicable.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3651933.stm <------- DaimlerChrysler dumps Mitsubishi. This is pretty old news, and the situation has worsened since then.

http://www.mitsubishisucks.com/news/japan/motors/ <------- Hardly neutral, but totally true. This articles actually details Mitsubishi's fall from grace.

No way can this situation be described as "far from catastropic".

They still sell more cars than Subaru... The difference being Subaru is pretty profitable.

i believe mitsu is the first ever japanese car company. Sad to see it in the current predicament. However Nissan was in a similar situation in the late 90s, and look at where it is now. its not over till the fat lady sings.

The biggest difference is Nissan had a pretty good car lineup, they just didn't market themselves very well. The old Sentra SE-R, 300Z, 240SX, and Maxima we're all excellent cars, Nissan just did a poor job of letting everyone know about it. Also, there was still a lot of the belief that Japan made economical cars and weren't to be looked upon for more performance oriented cars. Very few people understood a car like the Maxima, 240SX, or Sentra SE-R back then.

I see the Evo as the FD of this decade. An unbrideled driver's car that sets everything else as a second priority.

I drove an STI today - one of the new ones with the Tribeca nose treatment. A buddy at work let me take his car out at lunch and drive it on some familiar back roads. It's a lot of car, and a nice one at that. I can see why people like them - the kick from the turbo was great. But it did reinforce that for me, I still want a rear-wheel drive, naturally aspirated car, or something with a supercharger at worst. Perhaps if I really got to flog it I'd like the STi better, but I think I'm sticking with RWD.

Now, about that axial flow supercharger...
