And some, like the Z/G35, could stand to try harder.

I dig the new styling personally, the B-Mers were looking pretty stale for a while, now when you drive around and see one in traffic etc. there is no mistaking them, even if some folks are going "what the heck is that, ewww", at least their new shapes don't people to sleep like the older ones

IMHO BMW has taken a turn for the worse and Benz is going to eat their lunch - make mine an E55!
sorry, but i gotta call you out on this one. saying that the SMG is a bad system is complete ignorence. Maybe you have driven a NON ///M smg equiped car, and i will give you that they are not all that great in the "standard" bmw's. There is a reason for this. BMW decided not to include drive logic(or something of the likes) for the non m cars. This results in generally poor and jerky shifts between gears.
In the ///M cars (M3 is the only car currently on sale, but the upcoming M5 will have an smg option as well), drive logic will be included and the result is butter smooth shifts. In downshifts, the engine automaticlly blips itself, making it look like a perfect shift every time you do it.

sry for the tangent, but i love BMW's too much to let this one slide

A couple of things about the new M5: Does anyone think that a 5.0L V-10 with an 8250 RPM redline spell reliability issues? Granted it's still only 100 HP/L, but that's still a big engine to be rev'ed up to 8250. The E46 M3 I-6 has a similiar specific output and rev's to only 8k and I've heard reliability issues with that.

How do you people think the new M5's performance will stack up to the new M3 (with V8)? I would hope the new M3 would still be the performance leader the BMW, but 500 horses is alot - even at 3900+ lbs.

Overall, I like the M5 - even with its Pontiac Grand Am tail lights :p .

I like the styling personally, while I don't like the styling of the Z, 5, 6, or 7 series that much (I guess I only like the 3 series really) and I wonder what the performance figures will be. If I had a lot of money I would have an ///M. However if you are looking for reliability I think that you shouldn't be looking at a BMW.

The rod bearings were failing. You make it sound like it was no biggie. Not true. BMW blamed many of the owners for abusing the engine and refused warranty. After more than a hundred failures they began to change their tune.

I witnessed 3 M3 engine failures in '01&'02. All the same cause; some sort of oil system problem leading to rod-bearing failures and parts coming through the side of the block.......ouch!!

I agree- the car stirs no passion, although I'm sure it's very competent and efficient- but the true car lover sees something different in his relationship with his car.

I would sooner own a 1973 Lancia Fulvia than a four door doctor's car.

I'm in a big arguement right now with a buddy I know who has a M5 on order. He's a big numbers guy - it's all about HP, torque, 0-60 and 1/4 mi. He thinks our RX-8's are slow and not worth the money. I try to tell him any car for 80-90 grand better beat a RX-8, but I don't know, I'd love to show him up with a car that costs less than half the price of his.

Damn, I guess if you're all about #'s that AMG65 is for you. Personally, I've never been much of a Mercedes fan for anything. I've always preferred BMW over Merc.

Sorry but I don't see that happening. The next M5 will have ungodly performance. Even on a track the RX8 will have a hard time keeping up.

You car may handle better, but any time there is anything remotely staight he will more then make it up.

No doubt!! My arguement was, though, for 80+ grand it better be able to perform. I was trying to argue that for half the price (my 8 with 10 to 15 thousand worth of mods) it would be able to beat a M5. My ultimate dream would be to buy a new Lotus Elise, engine/tranny swap a Hytech modified K20 Honda engine (probably worth about 250+ at the wheels) and blow the doors off just about anything the automotive industry can throw at it: Just pure unadultered performance!
