According to this, a large move towards lithium battery equipped cars will be rather difficult, since the supplies of it aren't huge. Actually from what I read elsewhere, lithium is fairly common in most rocks but only small amounts. In other words, it's there, but it will cost a lot to extract it.

Maybe Firefly's batteries will pan out. They're basically just regular car batteries but with carbon foam instead of lead. They're lighter, have energy density on par with NiMh, don't use exotic metals, are compatible with existing car battery manufacturing/recycling facilities, and should only cost slightly more than existing lead-acid batteries. At least we'll see electric riding mowers pretty soon.
