It's probably a good idea. By keeping gas prices flatly high it allows car companies to properly focus on creating high mileage cars. ie. Huge fluctuations in gas prices won't cause car companies to get jacked. As can be seen by the high mileage cars that are in excess supply now but were hard to get during the days of 5$ gas.

gas prices always go up in the summer... and premium did rise into the 5's over here. you drive less and spend more time at home.
Honestly guys people are just trying to make money and make more of it, enough is never enough. Same with our cars we are always trying to do something to it to upgrade the looks or performance its never enough and when it is we buy a new car.
Nothing will change until big business is destroyed, the longer large corporations run the planet the worse things will get. Big business could give two ***** about the environment or paying people **** wages or destroying small business in communities. They just want to make the next dollar and they don't care who they run over in the process.

You bought the car from big business. You buy the gas from big business. In what alternate reality do you think that attacking said big businesses will result in better cars or cheaper gas for the working person?
Newsflash - big business never met government regulations they didn't like. You know why? because A) they spend millions on lobbyists to control what such regulations end up saying B) they pass the cost of said regulation on to YOU and C) they can comply with such regulations while it puts small business out of business. There is no more certain way to ensure big business crushes local ones then enacting a thousand pages worth of government regulation on the matter.
