The Ultima Factory yesterday smashed the production car world record in an Ultima GTR for sprinting to 100mph and back to zero again beating times set by all manner of supercars.

Driven by Ultima Director, Richard Marlow, the factory built Ultima GTR set a new world record time of 10.3 seconds to achieve 0-100mph-0 smashing the previous record by half a second. The British built super car stormed from 0-60mph in 2.8 secs and reached 100mph from standstill in an incredible 5.9 secs before coming back to rest a mere 4.4 secs later.

All of the times were set by a standard, factory built, fully road legal, road tyred Ultima GTR built using all of the high spec factory specified and proven parts. The car was even equipped with a few luxuries such as air conditioning but no traction control devices; launch control systems or ABS braking aids were used.

The car was fitted with its recommended Porsche G50 5 speed transaxle and normally aspirated 640BHP 377ci Chevrolet V8 engine which is a standard offering by the factory from its official engine suppliers American Speed.

Ultima are particularly proud that their record time beat the legendary £630,000 McLaren F1 road car by well over a full second at less than one tenth of the cost!

Richard Marlow, Director of Ultima Sports Ltd said “The 0-100mph-0 test is believed by many to be the ultimate test for any car and is a true indicator of a cars all round performance ability. We haven’t strapped any timing gear onto one of our cars for a few years now and decided that the time was right to demonstrate to everybody how we have been successfully developing our product over the years and gained a world record in the process."

Bouyed by his success, Richard continued, "We also wanted to go on to measure the 0-200mph-0 time at the relatively short Bruntingthorpe runway on the same day however severe rain and thunderstorms curtailed this for now but it didn’t stop Ted from achieving a rather interesting 192mph pass in the wet on standing water with over 1500rpm still available!”

The test was conducted, overseen and verified by an official from Datron Technology and the latest state of the art GPS timing gear was utilised to achieve and ensure maximum accuracy.
A submission has been made to Guinness Book of Records.

 

Thats awesome. Anyone know whats the official rx-8 0-60-0? Ive heard some times but never seen an official or an all time low...

 

I just like the fact that it appears the car is using a stroked Chevy pushrod. For all the things people want to say about how unsophisticated the LS series engines are, they still get the job done.

 

Impressive acceleration and braking numbers but what about slalom speed and other handling

There are a few videos on the second website I listed that are pretty neat. And some better pictures than I orignally found in the GTR section. EVO Magazine is in love with this car, they have a couple of reviews on the site, along with Car & Driver and others.

This is the type of car I would love to have as a race car.

Is that a comprehensive list? It would surprise me if a Corvette Z06 is not on par with at least the Viper or NSX.

Its not that you can build it yourself. You HAVE to build it yourself.

By putting in the engine, you are the manufacturer and you avoid just a few of the following regulations that big manufacturers have to meet:

1. Crash test safety.
2. Airbags.
3. Fleet fuel economy.
4. EPA Tier II emission standards. (Just a basic cat would be necessary.)

I'm sure there are plenty more headaches that only auto manufacturers have to worry about and not a kit car builder.

Anyway, I think it is damn cool also. If I was to buy or build a supercar, this is the way I would go.

I would like to see some true first person testimonials not their cherry-picked selection. How is the general fit and finish to the kit? It looks good...

I hate admitting it, but the only I thing I would really miss is the stability control of the RX-8. Most of the time I engage the stability control when I expect it to come on, but there have been a few times when it did save me from having to do a quick recovery.

The GTR looks really badass... Canary thanks for sharing.

Note that the article is from 2000 and I'm sure things have changed since then. I got my answer on how loud it is. The article states the car is about as loud as a standard Corvette.

yeah, noise would prob be equivalent to a standard hotrod lol It's just funny to me that it screams the way it does and it's not even fuel injected, much less does it need 10 radiators etc lol (don't get get me wrong though, the Veryon is still a stunning car and remarkable achievement )

 

What's the Atom's times? It's as much a "production car" as the Ultima.

Edit: wikipedia says 10.88 in '05, and that sounds reasonable for the supercharged K20.
