One of America's best-loved muscle cars the Ford Mustang, has had a successful racing career in a number of series including NHRA, Grand-Am, IMSA, SCCA and NMRA. Missing from that list is NASCAR, the nation's premier racing series. Now Ford has announced that the Mustang brand will compete for the first time in NASCAR from the 2010 season.
"We're excited about Mustang coming to NASCAR," said Brian Wolfe, director of Ford North America Motorsports. "It's the most successful product nameplate in racing history, and it seems only right that it should be coming to the most popular form of racing in North America."
Official NASCAR approval has been finalised and production of parts will begin once the templates have gone through the required processes. Teams will then start testing during the autumn for the coming season.
"We're excited about the new car in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and particularly the new body styles such as the Ford Mustang," said NASCAR President Mike Helton. "It's going to be one good-looking race car."
The Mustang won't be the only Ford in racing however; the 2010 Fusion (Sprint Cup) and the 2009 Ford F-Series (Camping World Truck Series) are already earning their professional racing stripes.

Actually I like NASCAR more than F1 in general, more passing instead of always following the leader. In regards to the Mustang, just another attempt to gain fans with no idea that all those cars are practically cookie cutters with a different brand engine and outside shell over the chassis. Sides this is only Nationwide, not Sprint cup....even more chirps
I'm more of a dirt racing fan, far more exciting to watch than anything else IMO. Second up would be Rally.

Between the naps, yes I do enjoy it,heh.
There are only a few tracks that are good for watching IMO for passing on the high side and not just the bottom groove and make close tight racing action: Darlington, Bristol, Dover, Atlanta, Richmond, Charlotte & Texas. I prefer these over the super speedways since it comes down to more driver skill and not just drafting all the while.
But nothing beats putting clay down at a 1/2 mile track like Bristol and watching the World of Outlaw sprint cars demolish NASCAR's top speed high 120's and jacking it up to 170ish. Gotta love 800+ hp in a dirt car that weighs around 1,400 lbs. That's like taking an Indy Car or F1 engine into a car on dirt slinging sideways doing slide jobs on each other with much much smaller tracks; very intense. Is why I miss racing them so much
EDIT: Did I just thread jack? ^_^ Not that I expect many to reply anyhow to a NASCAR thread here...

I am not a fan of NASCAR, but I do have to accept its a very popular everywhere else and the people running seem to know what to do.
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, Inc. (NASCAR), celebrating 60 years in 2008, is the sanctioning body for one of North America's premier sports.
NASCAR is the No. 1 spectator sport -- holding 17 of the top 20 highest-attended sporting events in the U.S., and is the No. 2-rated regular season sport on television. NASCAR races are broadcast in more than 150 countries and in more than 30 languages.
NASCAR fans are the most brand-loyal in all of sports, and as a result more Fortune 500 companies participate in NASCAR than any other sport.
NASCAR consists of three national series (the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series), four regional series, and one local grassroots series, as well as two international series.
NASCAR sanctions more than 1,200 races at 100 tracks in more than 30 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico. Based in Daytona Beach (Fla.), NASCAR has offices in New York, Los Angeles, Charlotte (N.C.), Concord (N.C.), Conover (N.C.), Bentonville (Ark.), Mexico City, and Toronto.

Nascar fan #3 here. Don't care much about the Mustang coming on, like someone already said, the only thing Mustang about it is the name, most of the car will be a cookie cutter like everyone else has. In the Sprint Cup with the COT (car of tomorrow/today) it seems just about everything but the engine/drivetrain is the same for everyone and then the driver/tuning of it is what makes one better than the other.
