480 is not 'enough', its just what it has now. As time goes on it'll gain more to keep up.

to some extent i agree with you. but also are cars with no torque (Proto Cars in the Lemans, and Rolex series) cannot live with out the high rpms.

but as for the rx8 concerns i agee. but then i look at the proto cars of those series, then i notice the rx8 works in the same fashion. if its able to keep speed with out slowing down on turns, or race traffic, it would do just fine.

You just fudged yourself...

as for the handling issue I have an 04 Viper SRT 10 and let me tell you that thing handles better than our 8's with 505 horses and a redline at 6500 rpms

I completely agree, no real comparison (hence the video showing that)...but then, threads started by the OP generally lack something.....often a reason apparently

How long do you guys think it will take for this to change?

I give them 20 years.
Not that this is exactly what you are thinking about, but if you go BACK 40+ years to the carburetor days, engine RPM was only limited by valve train float. I know that Ford had an 8000 RPM tach for their 1966 Hi-Po V8 they put in their Mustangs.

Right, but and engine with little torque or potential torque will need something else to compensate for it, hense higher HP, RPM, or lower weight. But this is the way the engine is designed; it is what it is. The reason we have so many different engines is because there are many people with different views/wants/goals from engines. Not everyone wants or expects the same thing out of an engine, hence why you have so many people "redesigning the wheel" (so to speak).

I don't understand why we get so many threads about topics like this; there are different cars because there are different people. If you don't like a car, it's probably because you were not the manufacturers intended target.

I've adjusted my stock RX-8 with a 22,000 RPM tach.

Still has the fuel cut at 9300, though.

I hit fuel cut in 2nd gear yesterday leaving a Legacy GT on a very twisty back road scared me for a split second I didnt notice I was up that high, rotary smoothness, most engines sound like theyre coming thru the hood at 6500rpms

What year was this? Max that I can recall was in the 19s. In '08 season they were rev-limited to 19k, this year 18k.

I don't post much, but I must say...this is a stupid ******* thread.

I love my high revving rotary to death, but I'd happily trade 1.5k rpms of redline for an extra 150hp, and more importantly, and extra 150lb-ft tq and a snail. More importantly, I don't agree with shitting on American cars for the sport of it. I just appreciate different cars for what they are.
