Mazda has been talking about putting a rotary engine into a minivan/crossover type deal but they're more concepts than anything else. The 16x is still in R&D stages basically because its not turning out as good as planned and other issues supposedly as well.
The rotary does very good when using (burning?) hydrogen as it doesn't have the super high nitrous oxide emissions as does the piston engine. There's also been talk of using the rotary in a hybrid type setup for the purposes of something like a van or whatnot.
Realistically, for all intensive purposes the rotary is dead once the 8 retires...at least for a little while.

Don't listen to these n00bs in this thread, they know nothing about the new RX-7.
Believe it or not, there is a new RX-7 in the works. The specifics on the car was actually stolen and then leaked to the public by rotary enthusiast ninjas. The specs include a new ****** system (Forced Air Generated Ground Overpowered Turbo). In fact, it also comes with a PIPM (Pre-installed ***** Magnet) along with a special limited edition package where you can add reciprocating parts to the rotary engine! The cool part is that the car comes standard with a pull out mini-radio so that you can listen to it when you go to a park or to the beach.
