Hmm. Interesting you come to that conclusion. I made the switch from the RX8 to an S2000, and I gotta say the MPG is very noticable. I've gotten 28-30mpg several times cruising at 70-75mph highway, and in normal city driving I can pull off 23-24. Granted, if driven at high rpms, I will agree, the S2K will guzzle gas, not as bad as the RX8, but the MPG is closer. Under highway and normal driving that isn't spirited, there is indeed a difference, and it's quite noticable.

I had an 01 S2000 after selling my RX8, but 9 months later got rid of it for an 06, and I did lose a little bit of MPG, but that might be because it's new, and also a bigger displacement engine with more torque and different gearing. I pulled off 32mpg on the 01 highway, and averaged about 25mpg with 50-50 city highway.

Now for my 04 RX8, I could never pull off more then 22-23mpg on highway regardless of speed, and on city driving I was always in the teens. Personally, I saw a pretty nice change.

The RX8 is more practical in every aspect except perhaps compromised reliability long term, and gas mileage, but if you really wanna save on gas, the S2000, while being one of THE BEST sports cars for gas mileage to match it's power, isn't exactly a good choice for that reason. You'd be far better off getting a practical car like a Civic, and I'm not so sure I'd buy an S2000 with high mileage. Odds are it wasn't driven like a grandma.

As for the S2000 as a third car choice, I think perhaps you're not thinking practical here, but more to spoil yourself, which hey, that works. HEHE It might be out of your budget because $10k for an S2000 right now is gonna get you pretty nicely worn and beaten down car. For $10k, there's far better choices as a gas saving vehicle, while still getting performance and practicality. The S2000 is practical from a MPG and reliability standpoint, but that's where it ends IMO. I'd look into a an RXS, as it will get even better gas mileage, and you can get a newer less mileage one with less potential problems in the near future. Good luck!!!

Afterwards, I would have to buy a trailer or just sell the ATVs....since I don't ride motorcycles anymore I had to have some fun so that was my justification for the ATVs which lead to the truck.

What is strange is that regardless of engine size, truck mileage (my recent experiences) all seem to hover around 13-14 mpg. My daughter bought an '03 Dodge Ram single cab with a 3.7 V6 and it sucks down as much gas as my 5.9 V8...

Of course, it isn't nearly as much fun to drive. Although the new Hemi engine has more to offer, the 5.9L it replaced is quite torquey and has plenty of power.

Hope that makes sense....

Thanks for your input, if you don't mind me asking, how much are your fill ups with your S2000, I assume you run premium? Is it about in the $30-40 dollar range?

I usually don't let the tank run too low, as it's not my daily driver, but the gas tank is smaller then the RX8 (only 13.2 gallons), so I have spent $30 to fill it, back when premium fuel was in the $3.00 range, as it took about 10 gallons. I'd imagine now you can spend $40 if you let tank run all the way to bottom, and with today's gas prices on premium fuel.

The most miles I ever pulled off on an S2000 was about 280 miles (on my 06, which I got 27mpg on that tank highway trip to north carolina, but I was driving 75-85mph), but of course I never let it get low enough to reach 300. If you keep the S2000 at 65-70mph, you can reach 30mpg (I hit 33mpg once cruising on highway in my 01 at 65-70mph, but in all honesty it was manipulated), but like I said, my 06 S2000 lost a couple of MPG perhaps because it's newer and barely broken in, and perhaps because of the increased torque and bigger displacement engine. I may get that back as I get more miles on this thing.

The car is easily capable of 30+mpg, but high 20s is more realistic unless you maintain a steady speed below 70mph the entire time, which I gotta tell ya, that was torture, and I'll never do it again.

at high rpms you are correct, under normal daily driving keeping revs low, you are incorrect.

Sorry, but this whole concept of buying an additional car to save money is just absurd.

Sure, your gas expenses might go down by a few hundred dollars per year, but then there is the cost of the car itself, interest on the loan, depreciation, insurance, sales tax when you buy the car, maintenance, the returns you would've gotten if the money was invested instead of being tied up in a car (i.e. "cost of money"), etc.

You're not going come even remotely close to breaking even here.
