beater to be
watup guys, its me again askin for other suggestions. So yea, me and my girl are finally moving in, something we have been lookin forward for a long time. To make a long story short, im not letting her drive my 8 :p , and we need a used automatic car that she can drive around in, and i can use in the winter. So yea, here are some of the things im looking into, please post some suggestions.
- not very expensive, maybe 6k, maybe a lil more, it all depends
-dependable, something thats not going to be breaking down every month
-good lookin, i was leaning on something like a mustang or a grand prix? (not soooo important)
-something that will drive ok in winter, and not struggle like my baby (rx-8)
-something that wont kill my wallet at the pump, average to good fuel economy would be good.
-should be able to hold at least 4 people and have a decent trunk space.
-something that i would be able to mod easiely, make it fast (maybe in the future)
i kno i cant have all of these and have to sacrafice one for the other, just gimme ur toughts, thanks

buy a $5-6K Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla. Make sure it's been maintained OK. Maintain it.
spend $500 on winter tires and rims.
you will be happy.
P.S. I missed the good looking requirement... that probably definitely drops the Corolla, but doesn't rule out the Civic, as you can make it look tastier than the street rice. It's also moddable like nobody's business.

Get a Toyota. They're indestructible. After someone totalled my MX-6 and I had to unexpectedly buy a car with little available funds, I bought a decade-old 170k miles Paseo. Never had a problem with it. Had it for a year, got up to about 192k miles, was ready to buy my 8, so I sold the Paseo to some friends, who report that its still going strong and they are delighted with it.

Beat out the Civic in this comparo in 2000. Get some winter tires on that bad boy and you are good to go! This would be my choice hands down.

I just bought an old saturn for my winter beater. $1,200 and it gets 38 mpg. yeah, it's not fast, it looks like ***, but it's a winter beater, so wtf do I care.
Best part is I got an old wagon, so I can use it to haul crap around if necessary. It's so cheap insurance is next to nothing, and I've got a spare car in case an RX8 mod goes awry.

I am surprised no one has mentioned a volvo yet. Those things will run until either you give it Dr. Pepper instead of gas or shoot a bazooka at it.
Check out some used volvos, either the station wagons or normal 4 doors. They run forever (over 300k miles) and are built cheap with a huge selling base. Should be able to pick one up for that price.
This one seems almost too good to be true!

5,500 buy it now price
94k miles, fine for a volvo
AWD for your winter
Leather seats so it will be comfortable
Automatic so you don't have to worry about traffic
Single Owner
4 door decent looking and a normal color
I think something like this would be a no brainer. Good luck!

Yeah, I'd second the Volvo. The problem I've had in our area is that no one ever sells them. A coworker has one with 240k miles on it and it's still going strong. Things are built like a tank. Not sure what the gas milage is like on them though.
