BMW X5 opinions?

well today i burrowed my friend's X5 becuase tomorrow i need to go pick up ppl at the airport.... this car is just.... great! i use to drive a ML430.... and it just sucks compared to the X5(3.0i that i drove).... there's power, even tho i wished it was the 4.4i... cuase for an SUV i think ~250 is not enough.... it handles pretty flat.... not much roll.... suspensions r hard... it doesn't seem to be soft enough for a luxury SUV... but the interior is nice... kinda dull but i think it's nicer than my car... i just wish i have a X5 4.4i... or the 4.8i lol... anyways... overall this is a great car! i love it.... if i had the money i would buy one for winter driving... i would take this car over the ML or the Ceyenne.... god i love BMWs.....

please feel free to give any comments/feed backs on this car...

ps: this thing is a gas hogger tho.... 10 bucks canadian of gas won't even get me 1/8 of a tank! but i still love the car..!

if you love the x5... take out the new range rover :: test drove it today and my gawd that thing is a beauty.... new engine with bmw interior and the craziest suspension you'll ever handle... but then again it is alot more.

the x5's styling could be a bit better and the car could be a bit wider, but overall i say its a nice car... dont think i would buy that car though but cant go wrong with bimmer

I used to be a tech at a BMW dealer. I honestly am not a fan of the X5, BMW or BMW's engineering. My advise to everyone intrested in the X5 is to check out the Acura MDX first.

X5 is probably one of the best cars BMW has made. the interior is a bit small compared to other SUVs...but BMW always incorporates the "ultimate driving machine" motif in their cars. it's going to be sportier than other SUVs. plus, the X5's platform is based off of the E39 5 series. the 3.0 is a decent motor for the X5...but you're definately missing out on the 4.4, 4.6 and the new 4.8.

BMW's engineering isn't for everyone. they over engineer most of if not everything. the X5 is still an awesome car, IMO

yes for a guy to drive such s big car... i say the 3.0i is weak for its size.... but as a daily driver it dedecent enough.... oh and iorgot.. the steering is freaking heavy!!! but oh well it's a big car with big tires.... so can't blame it....

and yes i also like the discovery SPORT toooo.... the new Land Rovers r some crazy machines....

it's good if you don't plan to go offroad. But like Mike i'd take a Land Rover over one any day.

My dad had an X5 for 3 years (lease). It drove very well. Like a "BMW" for SUV's. Very tight on the roads, nice powerplant. It was kind've small in terms of space, and it had several mechanical issues, where I had to take it in for him. He just got the new 06' ML class Mercedes, and I honestly think it is a better SUV. Nicer interior materials, nicer layoout, larger, more cush.

Years ago we were shopping for an SUV for the Mrs. and seriously thought about the 4.4i X5. It was either that or the ML55 AMG benz, the normal ML was too soft for my taste. In the end, we felt both SUVs were just too big for her and we got a BMW 540i sport instead.

In short, I liked the style and interior of the X5, however the rear cargo space wasn't as large as I thought it should have been. The angled rear glass is great for style but limits the cargo room. It handled better than the AMG ML (IMO), but the power of the 5.5L AMG V8 pulled much harder than the 4.4 BMW. (The 4.6iS wasn't out yet at that time, let alone the 4.8)

While the new '06 ML looks very nice, I'd opt for the Range Rover or even a MB G-class over either the X5 or ML. I'd also probably opt for the X3 over the X5. We test drove the X3 about a year ago as a possible replacement for the 540i and found it a bit more nimble & sporty compared to the X5. I test drove the Porsche Cayanne too, but it did nothing for me. I dunno, I guess I think all Porsches should be 911s. Also, the X5 is due for a 2nd gen replacement in a year or two.

My wife's pick would probably be the X3, she likes BMWs and doesn't care for big cars or trucks. And if it were me, I like the Range Rover.

My parent's have a BMW X5 3.0i. I drove that car regularly before I had gotten the 8. I do admit that it is a great SUV. Haven't ever driven other SUVs though so I don't really have anything to compare it to. One of the good features on it is that it can tell you your gas consumption. I think when I was driving I was getting like 16.1 mpg. :D

too bad i had to return it today... i was having so much fun... dam it... i have to say... the 3.0i does not feel crappy at all considering the size of the SUV... there is actually power(but not much)... and compared to my car that i am driving right now MB CLK320 '00 the X5 even feels lighter! the engine just revs and at 3000rpm u can feel it pull... man i like that car soo much... and driving in the X5 makes me feel.... manly...lol... where as in the CLK i feel more young... god i love the X5.... but gas is killing... i had to fill up another $10 today... lol...

Besides my 05 Rx-8 I have an 05 X5 I bought for my gf. I love BMWs (just traded a 2001 530i and a 2000 328Ci (coupe) ). I love the way the X5 handles for being an SUV. I test drove others (MDX, Toureg, etc) but the BMW just "felt" right. Loved the features - bluetooth, 4 foot sunroof, residual heat ( if you live where it snows its worth its weight in gold) and a million other cool and useful features/options you just can't get anywhere else. Being from PA we get crappy weather so we needed somthing for winter. I tried convincing the gf that we should get an Audi S6 wagon quattro but she wouldn't agree to a wagon (V8, like 340 hp, 6 spd, gas guzzler tax ).

Upsides? Handling, performance (range of avail engines), BRAKES, features/options available, comfort, style (subjective), maintence included for 4 years, 50k miles

Downsides? Gas mileage is like 16 mpg (but what the hell, we drive 8's so who cares about gas ), not a lot of storage space overall, older years had reliability problems (lucky I've had NONE with my 05).

Anyway BMW runs like great lease deals on the X5 from time to time (under 500 a month).

Probably logged in 15 hours driving time in a first-year X5 3.0. Looks and drives like a bimmer, no doubt. Engine and handling was superb for a suv but a gas hog and many little problems and rattles for a $50k+ car but they may have improved on it.
