im with RotoRocket. but theres so many cars like this nowadays that i dont even bother being vocal about how freakin ugly they are. just thought bmw knew better than companies like hummer, ford, chevy. some of the design guys there are seriously retarded

I don't think VW knows what it wants to be in America. There either trying to push up-market stuff (phaeton) or trying to cash in on their low end stuff (beetle). If someone in America is gonna spend 60k+ on a German sedan then they would probably look at a MB, BMW or Audi.

i wouldn't say the rx-8 is unpractical.....
or were you saying the X6 was an unpractical gas guzzler? because it's pretty much the epitome of practicality and it will be more fuel efficient than our cars.
You're an embarrassment to Car and Driver if you actually are affiliated with them.

Vehicles like the X6 are just as guzzly as a more traditional shaped CUV/SUV and lose lots of cargo capacity and passenger space. Just get a wagon, minivan or traditional SUV/CUV.

Guess somebody likes it
taken from leftlane news:
The BMW X6 is undoubtedly a controversial vehicle. Many critics have labeled it an answer to a question no one asked. But, according to BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer, it's already a blockbuster success. At the company's annual general meeting, Reithofer said the first production of the X6 is already sold out.
"The new BMW X6 is best proof of the popularity of the X model range," said Reithofer. "Evidently, many customers were waiting for such a vehicle. The total 2008 production volume is already sold out." The comments were made during a speech touting the forthcoming X1, among other future vehicles.
While the X6 is "sold out" for 2008, that doesn't mean you can't still get one — it might just be hard. All the X6s are already sold to dealers, and the majority of dealers have a waiting list already. In some markets, it might be possible to find a dealer who still has an X6 available — it's just unlikely, especially in big cities.

^ LOL, I didn't see them having too much trouble selling it as it seems X3's and X5's sell well and the three letters B-M-W are a good selling point.
People might as well get used to these types of body styles as the SUV as we've traditionally know it is pretty much dwindling down. Many consumers that want the tall and commanding presence of SUV's and won't buy sedans/wagons/estates/minivans are abandoning the huge traditional SUV's for these cross-over type cars whether the gas mileage is any better or not. Maybe they don't want to put off a gas-guzzling image and that's why they think these cross-overs fit the bill.

I think people are getting tired of driving huge, bulky, boring vehicles myself, alot of these "crossover" vehicles give you a nice compromise between car/truck without putting you asleep behind the wheel. I don't think it's so much marketing or putting off an image as it's just people looking for the next big thing, and these may or may not be it for a while.

Clearly they were thinking about this
The AMC Eagle from 1981ish. I find it funny that BMW is trying to claim they have invented something new here when clearly they havent. AMC did quite well with those coupe, sedans and wagons in the 80s- especially in the snow belt
