Congrats tigger. The 8 and GTO couldn't be more different, each appealing in entirely different ways. I always thought the GTO never got the respect it deserved, considering its a 400hp muscle car with an IRS at such a good price.

Enjoy.

I guess people wanted a design that screamed aggressive muscle. I will admit that while I respect the car, it is a boring design.

some of the amounts some members were being offered for trade-in's it was "do it now or evetually get reamed!"

the ir0ny is amazing...

Agreed. And even though people like to throw out "It has 400hp", I like to reply "It weights 3700lbs". Honestly, I think they look bland stock, but lower it, throw some wheels and a nice exhaust and I will do a double take.

tiggerlee,

Congrats on your GTO...or Monaro..

How do you like the Aussie made US engined muscle car!, they were made in my state at GM Elizabeth, South Australia, about an hours drive from where I am now.

Interesting you traded an 8 for a GTO,
I have a local manager/mate of a supermarket who recently traded his RX-8 Shinka for a the last Monaro, in the copper colour, bonnet scoops etc.

We regularly chat, and have a go at him for trading in his Mazda...saw him last week, the Monaro had a recall on the steering rack...leaking, and a problem with the passenger side airbag sensor.....but overall likes it....

I asked how he compares the 8 to Monaro, obviously he likes the V8, but the 8 way out handles it ,and the Mazda was far better put together and finished, and a little more up to date.

I pointed out to him that the Monaro/GTO is old in body design (11 years), compared to the 8.

He loves the Monaro, but misses the 8, so as he said it was an impulse...last Monaro being built thing...I get the impression he would like both...

Enjoy the GTO..

I looked at the GTO earlier this year. Sad thing is the auto gets charged a gas guzzler charge! Which makes it more expensive than the stick.

Believe it was 12 or 13 hundred for that.

Miles per gallon is 1-2 less than the manual version...

Love the exhaust note!

Congrats Tigger.

Yeah I knew it was made "down under" and knew some of the history behind the GTO/Monaro.

I'm really happy with it so far. Couple minor things...The steering wheel buttons aren't illuminated. The
steering wheel doesn't tilt down as far as the 8. I always drove the 8 with it all the way down. Just minor things
like that. But the GTO feels like such a beast compared to driving the 8.

Tell your mate I can relate, mine was also an impulse buy. Grew up with mostly GM products, had a '79 Z28 and I currently
have a '83 Monte Carlo SS back in Illinois that my brother is restoring. Maybe deep down I'm just addicted to the HP and torque.
Like I said earlier, I knew going into the deal what the advantages and disadvantages would be to trading so I wasn't expecting any suprises by the change.

I do miss the 8. It is an amazing little car. Very nimble, responsive and fun. A truely enjoyable car to drive. As I said ealier, I love the car for what it is and what it can do. I still consider myself a rotary enthusiast and hope to someday own an FD. But for now concentrating on buying a home.

That said, I just felt it was time for a change. Can't really narrow it down to just one thing but just the way I felt. All in all it was a great deal, I got more than I thought I'd get for trade and the GTO feels very well made and is fun to drive
but in a different kind of way, and I hope will get me several years of driving enjoyment. I just hope the 8 goes to a good home.

Thx 4 years!

Fortunately I didn't have to pay the gas guzzler tax. I was told that's only on new purchases. I bought this one with a little over 1700 miles. So I guess the original owner already paid the tax. At least that's what the dealership told me. I haven't heard different yet.

Yeah the exhaust is hawt! Kinda took me back to my youth a little when I started it for the first time.

Sweet a way around it!

My wife bought the Grand Prix GXP with the V8 and it has a nice rumble to it but nothing like the GTO.

Congrats! I considered a GTO until I found out it couldn't come with side airbags. I'm a safety freak I know. It's blazingly fast and a good deal.

I will pass the info on.....

Yep, the V8 sure gives you a kick in the backside, I always find it interesting on the forum how everyone wants more HP in the 8....

Check out the UK Top Gear site for hop laps and there is not a lot of difference in times..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps.shtml

The 8 at 131.8
Old 350Z at 131.8
BMW M3 131.8
Holden Monaro 5.7L 133.9
Vauxhall VXR (I think 6.0L) 130.1

I am sure your old RX-8 will go to a good home, worry wart!, you sound like me...

Hey, Tigger, not to make you angry or anything.....

The 2006 GTO has illuminated steering controls, newer taillights, faster moving power seats, extra power outlets in the interior, and a steering wheel that tilts a little farther up and down.

With that said, you got a great deal on your GTO. I am actually in the process to get a 2006 Black GTO with red interior six speed. I found another dealer that is not bullshitting me like the last. If all goes well, I will have this beast by Thursday.

Congrats again!

Congrats Tigger.

While there is a gas guzzler tax, keep in mind that when all is said and done it's only $605 more to get the auto instead of 6 speed, because the 6 speed is actually a $695 option, then you deduct the $1300 gas guzzler tax. It's really not all that bad if you think about it. I watched a guy in spring at the local strip run constant low 13s with pretty much a basic every day traffic light take off, while guys in STIS and EVOS were really putting some serious strain on their cars to achieve similiar or slightly better times. It was like watching the same run over and over again with that GTO during the three times I watched him go, which was boring, but the EVOS and STIS always had mixed results because of a mistake or two they'd make during either the launch, or during the shift, and of course it was much more interesting.

I was hoping that GTO guy would match up with that guy in what appeared to be stock 06 STI that day, because it would have been cool to see the GTO start out behind, and then reel that car in. This thread is making me want one now, because I love rolling power. The GTO is an absolute beast on the highway. I so much considered it, but power alone couldn't allow me to pull the trigger on one. Either way, it's a great machine I'd love to own.

That sounds mean as hell. Thanks for the link. I've been checking around to see what exhaust is available and different pricing. Just need to do more research.

Nah not angry. Just little things like that I can live with. I was told today if I really wanted the illuminated buttons that I could order the buttons and parts from GM from the '06 model.
But probably won't bother. I've gotten use to the steering wheel. It's only about a click above where the 8's is so all is good. Just notice stuff like that in the begining, then it grows on you after awhile.

Good luck on the '06...let me know how things turn out.

Congrats on the purchase.

I drove one a while back. At the time, I still had my 94 Camaro v6, and when I got back in that car after driving the GTO, it seemed like eternity for it to get up to speed. First car that ever made mine feel that slow. When shopping for my new car a few months back, I wanted to get the GTO, but I couldnt get past the exterior styling. Some like it, but I wanted something a little more sporty. I totally dug the engine, interior, and exhaust note. If only they could have put a nice shell around it, it would be the best car (for me) under 40,000.

Ah yes! Congrats!!! Glad you got what you wanted. Must see it! post pics as soon as you can. I bet yours is more fun...6 speed and all. I decided awhile back that I just wasn't ready for another black car. I'm pretty **** about keeping my cars clean but damn black is just so difficult....looks HAWT when it is clean though. Zainoed mine yesterday...looks awesome.
