1st off, if your going to speed, buy a radar detector. Also, get one of those laser jammers too (laser, not radar jammer... and the laser ones really do work). With the radar detector and laser jammer, you have some protection.

Its really all a big GAME, think about it. If the gov't really, really does not want you to speed. They would simply outlaw any cars that can go above 80 MPH or put a speed limit restrictor in every car. But you see, then the gov't would not make any MONEY, off of giving out speeding tickets, photo-radar machines, etc.... The game is played with MONEY.

How many people for outlawing fast cars? Oh, I see. So thats why you have cat and mouse games. The cops have radar and laser speed guns and the smarter fast drivers ( or those with cash) have radar detectors, laser jammers, and photo reflective plates (to stop from having your license plate photographed at an angle).

So, if you are going to speed, protect yourself. Make sure to wear your seat belt, buy a radar detector, and make sure the road is clear. If you get caught, then pay your hefty ticket, and seek to upgrade your radar/laser detection technology.

The guy was driving a Magnum...he mentioned it when he was racing the other Magnum. Also, he has a radar detector, look to the left of the rearview mirror and you can see it's green light blinking and he fiddles with it when he gets pulled over.

Apparently he skimped and got a cheapo one, whatever the case it didn't work!

Then again there are ways of clocking speed w/out use of "modern" technology. Regardless the way I see it: Yes its not smart or safe to speed like that, but for those who feel they HAVE to they should do it as smartly and as safely as possible. I don't condone it, despite having done it, but if I knew a track I could routinely go to for fun like that I would do it in a heartbeat over public roads.

If you are going 144, I don't care what kind of radar detector you have. You arent going to be able to drop 80 mph in a Magnum before the radar gets you.

I hope he fought the ticket. The issuing officer was not the officer who 'clocked' him, no witness (if the first cops was off duty) ticket dropped.

Four kids go flying off an on-ramp to their fiery deaths in an RX-8 and everyone complains about how they're spoiled brats that deserved to die. Now, some older guy goes 144 mph and half the people think he should be given the key to the city.

144mph is too fast for being on the road -- end of story. I don't know is if he should be sent to jail, but he should lose his license for at least a year. If every cop treated this scenario the same, everyone would be going that fast. The only thing that keeps people from doing bad things are consequences. This guy got off very, very easily and it's unfortunate that his punishment is nowhere near what it should have been.

most the the highway patrol guys i know won't bother chasing you if you are over about 120 on the interstate. now if you slow down they will bust you. 1st they cant catch up to you if you keep going. 2nd it too dangerous for other trafic and 3rd it way to much paperwork for them to arrest you so they always drop the ticket to like 15 over anyways.

Also, did those cops really clock him, or were they winging it. Different cop gives ticket to the one that clocked him? Off duty cop? Weird stuff. No wonder they dropped the ticket to 90 and took off.

As far as the other officer writing the ticket, the easiest explanation is that the original officer was out of tickets and had to to call another to write the citation. The original officer will be listed as a witness on the ticket.

They would also increase the penalties for speeding in general.
Right now, I see speeding tickets as a luxury tax to go fast. Just like the gas-guzzler tax or luxury-car tax.
If you get caught, pay your ticket, and go fast again. If you're willing to pay the fines, you get to drive faster than most.
I work w/ a guy that got 2 speeding tickets a few months apart.
I watched him take the online traffic school twice in 3 months.
For him, paying the fine/school is worth getting caught speeding 1 or 2 times every couple of years.
If the Gov't wanted to stop speeders, they wouldn't allow traffic school to keep points off of you license.
Fortunately for me, I don't drive too much faster than the speed limit, and I have a trusty radar detector to give me the occasional "heads-up" alert.

Just out of curiousity.....did no one else see him pass the semi in the break-down lane? Yes, I speed. Yes, I've caught a 3 into 4 shift at redline...on the interstate. (BTW, that's 86 mph, not 100) But I would never go that fast on a public road. The few times I've gone excessively fast on a public road, it was A) daylight, B) no other traffic, and C) a split interstate with trees separating the lanes. Regardless of what I did or what could have happened, the only damage would be to me, a guardrail, or some trees. What if ole' boy picked up a nail when he passed the semi, and the tire decides to blow out and he jumps the lane dividers? There was traffic in the oncoming direction. Or how about the people getting onto the interstate as he was getting pulled over? Do you really think he would have slowed down for them, or was it because he was getting busted. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior, and I think he should have gotten busted for the full 144mph, not just 90mph.

Thing with the officer getting someone else in to write the ticket was probably just something like he was an undercover or something. I knew a guy who got ticketed for wreckless driving and a few other things but the cops who pulled him over were in an unmarked car and had to call a beat car in to write the ticket. Guy went to court and the only person there was the officer who wrote the ticket and since he didn't see what happened the guy walked. Granted he would've gotten off anyways since he was having tranny issues, but y'all get the idea. I guess that only beat cops/traffic cops can write tickets.

the rule in most states is the officer writing the ticket, must be the one who witnessed the infraction.

The cops here in Alabama can pull you over if they think you were speeding. They can also write a ticket by judging the speed of your car against theirs.

They do wing it sometimes. You are allowed by law to see their detector. I asked a cop once and he was cool about it. He showed me my 82 in a 70. Shoulda bought a valentine one!

They can do that here in Louisiana as well. There's a process they use to determine your speed with some accuracy, but I do not remember it.

144 on the highway is rediculous. Those speeds are best left on the track.

Speeding tickets in Calif. appear to be cumulative - get enough tickets for being reckless and they take away your liscense -

Radar detector: that means his act was premeditated - he done this before, will do it again -
Autobahn - a little over-rated because milage sounds a lot faster in kilometers - and my experience in Germany was they tended to be crowded and slow around the big cities - just too many cars on the bahn. But those signs that say "going off" - were a shock to the system!

a 3k lb car is a deadly weapon at any speed if it can potentially hit someone... i didn't watch the video, and i don't know the context. but, if the guy was doing 144MPH on a public city street and not in the confines of a race track, then he's just as dangerous as someone randomly shooting a gun into the air. and, he deserves to go to jail... end of story.

About 2 weeks ago Montreal Le Devoir newspaper auto critic Phillipe Lague got busted at 5 am on the highway at 222 km/hr test driving a dodge charger srt8 $900.00 ticket and all his 15 points!!!!!!
