Car Design Theory - Do you agree?

Ok my theory is that the design of cars in general follows, very closely, to styling of women during the time period of the design.

Think about the 70's and the styling of cars.

Think about the 80's and the styling of cars.

Think about the 90's and the styling of cars.

And think about our decade now and the styling of cars.

Now think about what was attractive in women during these time peiods, and the way they dressed, and the colors they wore.

I think car designers are direclty, or even indirectly, inspired by what the general populace views as attractive.

What do you think? Or am I just crazy? Am I the only one who thinks a car from the 70's looks like a woman from the 70's, as well as every decade looking like the women of the time period?

I can only imagine what the women around the Pontiac offices looked like back in 2000.

Makes sense and probably has a good amount of truth to it.

Wow, Pontiac and AMC maybe didn't have strange looking woman but blind men...lol.

Hmmm, does anyone know of a list of cars that woman designed? Not that it kills the theory, because mostly it's men making these designs but I'd be interested to see a woman's interpretation of car design.

Of course there is exceptions where designers were trying to go for 'different' or 'usable', but for the most part, any car designed to be attractive.

hmmm

I know what you're trying to say but I dont think its directly cor-realeted with female beauty per se.....

I think the biggest factor in car design is technology.

Designs change as new tech is introduced.....new tech that would make certain ideas of design more feasible today that may have been somewhat unreasonable (too expensive to manufacture.. nor efficient...) yesterday

Then you get those designers that design bad stuff because they are on this trip to design something thats more "different" than actually good.

I cant stand designers like that

I think you're hitting pretty close to the truth. Cars are designed around what people will think is attractive: Slim sleek lines, curves in all the right places, a pretty face, and a tight ****. It may not necessarily revolve directly around current fashions but I wouldn't be surprised if they contribute.

For a long time cars were definitely the result of the influence of the shapes and curves of women; especially since men were the designers. But in the early 1970's when emissions, gas mileage and crash safety suddenly became a big issue, those concerns became the dominant influence in designs. Suddenly you saw cars being advertised by their "drag co-efficient" and boasting about mileage and safety.

After about a decade of that the designs started shifting to "futuristic" which included "space-age" materials and what could be done with them. That was good up until the early 90's when apparently the mentality took over that you design by 'focus polls' instead of vision and artistic inspiration. That mentality is still with us unfortunately which is why the American companies seem to be stuck in the past, trying to go back to winning designs that were the product of vision and artistic inspiration because today's companies don't seem to know how to do that anymore.

I'm not sure why either. Don't know if it's a management issue, or a designer issue. Or both.

Sweet. I love space age polymers! Now that we're in the information age it's tough to find. All I can seem to find is all this plastic...

Is this what you want? It could be designed by a woman. Judy and Jane Jetson.

So who was my BB designed after?

Mercedes used to paint their cars in colors that matched the eye shadow colors of the day.

Yes, the curves on a good looking car do come from nature, preferably women.

And the ugly ones are from committees and consulting groups.

And the Aztec has to do with drugs and secret government plans to cause us all to buy Japanese cars. As you can see, it went to market 10 years too late.
