The OP's mom is probably also vetoing coupes due to insurance rates. It generally costs more to insure a coupe, especially in the OP's age range. Same with getting a red car.
The 8 may count as a 4 door. You can inquire with your insurance company what it costs to insure one. (And not red one)
Some rules of thumb:
In the end no car can save you from being stupid.
Don't transport very drunk people, call a cab.
Remember you can always say No. (Even though it can be really, really hard to do.)
Most people DON'T have your best interest at heart.

Hello, new user here, Im 17 years old and am going to get a new car soon, and I tried in every which way to convince my mom to get me an Rx8, but she wont budge I went around looking for another car that looked almost as good as the 8 but couldn't find one, she wants me to get a "Sedan" even though i tried to argue that the 8 is a Coupe Sedan...
I am just kind of going for looks, chick magnet, etc. of the car, like the 8.
So does anyone have an idea for a car similar to an 8? I looked at the Lexus IS 250 MT and she then goes its too expensive this morning and then an hour ago she says that she doesnt care about how much it costs, so im guessing from $1-$25,000 could work

My teenaged son is learning how to drive, he thinks he'll be using my RX-8 as his car soon. Which I don't mind so much, but my wife is dead set against it. My wife drives a very high end luxury car, so she's not letting him driving that car on his own either.
Like the dad in the movie Transformers, I'm of the mindset that my son's first car is suppose to be cheap. OTOH, I also want the car to be safe. My son just wants a car that looks cool.
Don't know what he'll end up with yet, so I'm quite interested in seeing what kind of car your mom ends up getting you.

I'm in a similar situation, but from the opposite viewpoint.

Listening to what you are saying... I would get soemthign cheap... why? Keep your parents happy for now with a sedan you can learn on and screw up, and have them save the money they would spend on a nicer car you don't like for next year, when you turn 18, when yoiu will have convinced them youa re safe enough for an 8... get a used 3 for $10k or so. Drive it a year, sell it for $7-8k, and get what you want next year. Don't buy a new one for $20k or so, becuae yoiu will be stuck with it for years. Earn their trust, show them an adult line of thinking,a nd save them money in the process. IF you are sayign you are not ready for stick, realistically you are not ready for an 8, becuase auto 8's are the bastard stepchild we pick on anyways. It's not the same car. Say you came to a realization that maybe you should learn to drive better and be safe before you get what you want.

As much as this thread may be old... The car I recieved [which was actually around December 20th 07] is the 2008 Honda Accord Coupe v6... I don't know how I got it, but Ok... haha sadly its Automatic -.-
For the person looking for a car for his son, this car is definitely a nice choice, but i definitely recommend the i4 version because I have a lead foot hearing this engine rev... its slowly going away though which im happy about ^_^
Later on, I will take one of the advices by waiting after college and then buying an 8 as my "Performance" car used on the track where this Accord will be my day to day driver, I am very happy with my car, and my GF has the same exact car too! =D

Congrats. That accord should last WELL beyond college if you take care of it and keep your foot out of it a little.
