No, you type the code in while the CONTRA logo scrolls. If you're any good at it, you'll complete the code before the logo has completely arrived. It is necessary to press SELECT, to cause the logo to center itself immediately. Unless the logo is centered, you cannot start the game.

Therefore, to play a 2 player game, you press SELECT twice. Once to center the logo, and once more to change the default choice from "1 PLAYER" to "2 PLAYER".

UUDDLRLRBA SELECT START. (one player)
UUDDLRLRBA SELECT SELECT START. (two player)

If you don't use SELECT, you'll be starting at the centered CONTRA logo, staring at 2 tough dudes, wondering why the game hasn't started yet.

Then for SuperC, it is:

RLDUAB START

which really screwed up a lot of folks. Konami got smart and switched it up.

Once you're any good, you no longer require the code. Obviously not everyone is good enough, to stay alive long enough, to score extra lives through points alone.
