infiniti, maybe even volvo or saab
the fx35 is a good car - my mom just got one and absolutely loves it. she's not even a car person and she talks about her car like i do my 8.
some of the new volvo's actually look pretty good i think. their suv is ok, and they're new awd wagon looks nice. maybe even the saab suv will work...

Well looking at a SUV you need to decide what it is really being used for.
For example if you are really needing reliability, 4WD and off road capability then the only choice would be a Toyota 4runner or the Sequoia.
Off road and trendy: Toyota FJ
But for the occasional off road, and/or snow, then you have the mostly on road SUV in which I would pick:
On road and on a budget I would pick the CX-7 hands down.
On road and cost is not a major concern: The BMW X5 (1st choice of cost no concern) or the Porsche (2nd choice, but insurance will kill you as will any maintenance).
Both the CX-7 and X5 have exceptional handling and control (even in light off roading conditions such as snow and dirt roads), and are a bargain for what you are really getting. They don't feel like the near 5000lbs vehicles they are, but will save your *** if you do get hit (or are lame and hit someone/something). The X5 is not as reliable as the Mazda, but still decent.
I would never ever consider the Lexus RX (drive one and you will see why... it drives like a mini van and feels and looks like a luxurious mini van inside), or the Murano (tall station wagon version of the nissan Stanza/ Altima and about as reliable as a GM), and I have never seen or owned a Honda product that wasn't falling apart and nickel and dimeing someone by 75K-100K miles, so that rules out the RDX and CRV, and only gay men and lesbians drive Suburus in my part of the world.

he may actually love the cx7, I have a copper red one and enjoy it everyday. And in all honesty i'm not to worried out the engine, just like everything in this world proper maintainance and care will keep it running for a long long time. Turbo's don't kill engines, quite alot of turbo suby's are still on the road with +150k miles on them.
As for the x3 its a nice truck, but it does have quite a harsher ride than the cx7, especially if it has the sport package.

I know you listed Murano in your original post, I think a new model is to be revealed in Tokyo? so keep an eye on that...I also think the FX is due for a new model (though I'm pretty confident the Murano is not based on the FX from what I've read, even though most assume it so).
I just helped my mother in law go thru this process. We test drove most of the SUVs you listed, even the A3. I loved the A3....she watned more size. Ended up between the Cx-7, RDX and Subaru Tribeca.
She chose the RDX.....what about the Land Rover LR2?

i went today with my family to check out the nissan and mazda
went to nissan first, my pop acctually like the new rogue better, but i told him dont get any first year model car. so he back off and look at murano, again, he like the inside (?) , but the sales rep are jerks , first we asked for a test drive then he said ok, we waited like 10 mins, he got a key out said will pull one out, came back like 5mins later saying that murano has no gas in it (????), then we wait another 10 mins he said they ran out of test drive murano. we got pissed and left
to be contiune (this kb is the worst of theworst)

the computer b4 has a pos keyboard, much better now.
Anyway, went to Mazda, they have a new department, The sale rep, Chris, just started working there for 2 weeks. came from the Toyota dealership couple blocks down. We talked a bit about CX-7, but *strangly* my father like the CX-9 cuz it has third row of seats .... err .... my whole family hate CX-9, well, ok. Then we took the Cx-7 out for test drive. Before turbo kicks in the power was kinda weak, but as soon as the turbo kicks in, I think what about 2800 rpm ? the car finally starts pulling. Not very strong, but u can feel it. interior is ok for my taste, the test drive one has Navigation (Technology Package), not bad. some parts feels kinda cheap, like the Center console. Cargo space kinda small but should be enough.
We talked about the price a bit then left. they're asking 31500 for 08 with Technology package.
See if we have the time to go to more dealerships tomorrow.

FX35's / Muranos are nice
why do you hate bmw's? I HATE their interiors but the performance is great and you won't need to be his 'personal mechanic' if the maintenance is included.

+1 on the CX-7. I loathe SUV's, and it was actually tolerable. I was happily surprised. I haven't driven the RDX or the FX35, but I've heard good things. Test drive anything you even remotely consider, then go back and make decisions.

Despite the simularity, they are two different platforms, and should not be considered together.
Th FX is based off of the RWD FM platform that the Z/G35/G37 coupe and sedan are based on, while the Murano is based off of the Altima FWD platform.
They are as different as the 350z is too the Altima coupe.
With the exception of Guernville, most of the northbay is very straight... and anyone that has been to San Francisco knows that there are more bums and transients in San Francisco than people that perfer to be with their own sex.
Of course I could be lame and say I live outside San Francisco, but I have nothing to hide... unlike many members here

yeah, I know. I was implying he can't go wrong with either one.
(wasn't sure if the FX was in the budget)

Civic
Accord
Camry
Corolla
Altima
Lexus RXxxx
Murano
Maxima
and so on ...
I dont know, my father *might* want to get Lexus ... he doesnt like Mazda's name, he is still living in the 80s mind (when Mazda sucked so bad)
*sigh*
Might test drive more tomorrow. Lexus here I come.
BMW is still garbage (except the new M3)

My father(actually, more like my mom) been working for all his life, he(she?) wants to at least treat themself better. so money really is not an issue.
We even considered a porshce, but its really overhype SUV so we dropped it.
and my father is one of those *camry is the best car ever* kind of person. know what I mean ?
*sigh*
so its kinda hard to get him into the Mazda's bandwagon. especially with Mazda's poor history. I know its 100000000 times better now, but u know sometimes its really hard to change old people's mind. especially for old people going into their 60s(few more years) ... they always have this *I live longer so I know better than you* kind of thing in their head ...

Update :
Got an offer from one of the dealership. 07 CX-7 29900 Grand Touring with Technology Package and Remote Start. Didnt say if its AWD or FWD tho.
I think price is pretty good, from consumer reports, AWD with options from the above cost about 29987, thats already below invoice and Dealer holdbacks.
This dealership has ALOT of 07 CX-7 leftovers. So maybe thats why ?
