Dude, it pisses me off every time I think of a cheap fun car. Why must north america hate hatchbacks so much!!

I read a quote somewhere that said something along these lines
"the reason the mini sells so well in noth america is because nobody knows it's a hatchback"
So true. If it was called the mini hatchback im sure sales would be worse. We have issues with them for some reason.

True, true. While I'm not the biggest fan of the Mini, it's a nice little car. We need more similar stuff here! Better gas mileage, lighter and more fun! Granted the Mini's looks are not amazing, but there are so many other nice little cars I would want to come here. Fvcking NA! Why don't they understand all of the benefits. We should label them SUV's and say they have 4WD, that'll get 'em selling.

If I lived in Europe I wouldn't want one of those cars you are talking about. I live in Japan and truthfully I couldn't give a ****. Sure a Skyline GTR might be nice... just because I can7t get one in the US. but their price (onyl used available now) is freaking nuts. The last time I looked at Evo's a few years ago they weren't any better!

hot little sports cars are dying in Japan. Everything is turning into a POS automatic wagon. Wagons are fine, but these have no *****, no manual and no style. No thanks.

The Japanese themselves? Many prefer foreign cars. If they want luxury they get a Benz or a BMW (you see ALOOOOOT of them). If you want an SUV you get a Ford or a GM. You even see several Mustangs and a rare Camaro. (Thus while it may not fail, I don't think Lexus will do so well here)

The Mustang? Well according to everyone else it drives pretty well. Looks are subjective, but it's selling pretty well for Ford. I've even seen one here. Handling? Supposedly the race setup car (with the same live axel) has been doing well and modded cars like Steeda, Rousch and Saleen pull some decent skidpad and slalom numbers.

Clarkson is a moron.

You wouldn't want one of what cars? A small, well powered hatchback? Some of the most fun cars they are.

I don't really think he is a moron. Some of the stuff I disagree with. He seems to have a real hardon for italy. But, I can see a lot of his gripes in cars I have driven and he has reviewd.

Whoops, I missed that. I'd rather just have him review cars, skip the other nonsense that he's not made for obviously.

If you don't mind me asking, how is it you get to drive so many cars?
I've driven a GTI(modded pretty well), rsx-s, my rx8, a few other automatic sedans/wagons of friends(they were drunk) and both of my dad's jags. I wanna drive more sporty stuff, nowhere to do it. I'm going to the Zoom-Zoom live this winter which should be sweet, but that's only two more. What have you driven, and how did you get the oppurtunity?

I'm a pretty big mooch when it comes to cars. There is a couple avenues though.

I have been going to the track since I could drive so I met a lot of people doing it. Im just really freindly, offer them help all the time, slowly earn their trust, then BLAMO!! mind if I take a spin? :D They're all car people and they know I'm just a student, so they usually don't mind. Last car I drove was a supercharged E46. Hauled ***.

Then my dad has a lot of clients with nice cars and when they come to dinner they suck up to my folks hardcore. I just ask, then my folks and I convince them I can drive, and they let me too look good.

Then there is the freind avenue, they're mostly modified whatevers though, nothing too fancy. Though I do have a freind whose father owns a ford dealership liscenced to deal with SVT. So I get to drive those things when they bring them home.

I would still rather my own cars.

I would have thought about a small, well-powered hatchback.... when I was 16. Not interested now. A wagon (meaning 4 doors)... no problem. But one of the big issues is I don't want small. At least not smaller than a Golf (speaking of which the new R32 looks pretty hot. Comes in 2 AND 4 door in Europe and Japan. Also more hp this time... 250hp). It's hard to describe... I want a car that fits like a glove and has some room to carry junk and people. That's why as much as I love Mustangs, I have a feeling that the RX-8 will win that contest for me. It's not a matter of handling... I don't and won't track my daily driver. Enough handling for the street (better than your typical Camry, Accord, etc.)... a sporty feel, peppy performance, and hot looks and I'm happy.

Personally I'd never buy a French of Italian car. Hell all the French and Italians I know say the same thing! They all know that the reliability of those cars is only above Yugo. The German cars... if it wasn't for the price and the snobby attitude... I have always loved Porsche and BMW earned a special place in my heart with the E46. In 1999 I drove several models for a BMW sponsored charity drive... you got to run 'em hard over a set course. The 3 Series was nice... until I drove the 5 Series. Too bad they Bangled up the car, because I would kill for one of the last gen.

Everyone has their biases. If he is going to bitch, then he'd better give some semi-scientific grounds for it... some way he measured what he doesn't like. Otherwise it's just his opinion and why do I give a rat's *** what his opinion is anyway?

That's pretty sweet. My dad's friends drive lame-o SUVs so that route won't work. The best car any of my friends have is a Mercury Cougar, and it's automatic as well I should try to get to the track more often, so many cars I wanna drive :D

The new R32 does look freaking hot!! that's what I'm talking about. We didn't get the last one here in Canada, we better get this one. I'm liking the looks of the new seat leon, apparently going to come RWD.

RWD instead of AWD? Interesting. I know someone who drives one and it sounds mean, but I don't like to associate with that person too much. Japan, are you going to move back to the states soon, or are you stuck in Tokyo for a long while?

Oh no... I want to get out of Tokyo. Japan is nice. Tokyo sucks. Crowded, expensive, dirty (pollution sucks), small housing, overcrowded public transportation that stops at 1am, pace of life suck (little free time and lots of overtime)... so you can guess why NYC is out for me too. Unfortunately there are few good jobs outside of Tokyo/Tokyo-area. Osaka doesn't have much... I know several people who left there for better IT jobs in Tokyo, but they'd all rather live in Osaka. Sapporo... it has some jobs, but not that plentiful. Sendai... so so job market.

Tokyo is good if you're fresh out of college and single. You don't need much space, and there is a lot of partying/drinking in Tokyo. But after many years that gets tired. You eventually want to settle down and have a family and Tokyo is just not a good place for that. Buying a condo costs about 350,000,000-600,000,000yen on average (trendy places in central upscale places like Azabu, Roppongi, Shibuya run upwards of 1,000,000,000 yen). Buying a house with literally no yard... your front door is on the road... runs 400,000,000-600,000,000 yen on average. The worst part? Housing only depreciates. Many of the large houses on large lots in my area... they never sell. They end up wrecking the house and selling the land... which ends up split in half for two houses. The cost for the whole lot? 480,000,000 yen. Granted if you buy a resale... they cost 3/4 to one-half that price, BUT... the quality of housing construction sucked up until about 10 years ago... only recently has double/triple pane glass become more widely used and housing configuration and insulation was bad. So you'll have to spend money renovating the place that you probably won't ever get back.

More on topic with this tread... I miss driving. I have a car... that I only can use on weekends. I hate riding the damn train... which ISN'T always on-time and is always overcrowded at peak hours (getting to actually sit is a lucky treat). I miss being able to stop at the grocery store on the way home from work. I miss having time to catch a movie after work. Hell, I just miss having time after work to relax.

Public parking in TOkyo is 100 yen/20min, 100yen/30min, or 100yen/60 depending on the time of day and area. Parking tickets are about 15,000 yen and you get points on your license. Registered parking (at home. required for all cars by law over 660cc) can run you from 15,000 yen a month to 80,000 yen a month depending on area in central Tokyo (23-wards). Once you leave Tokyo... prices suddenly drop to 5,000 yen to 10,000 yen a month.

All highways/expressways are toll roads. The Shuto (capital) expressway in Tokyo costs a flat 700 yen. The best deal nation wide. The Tohoku Expressway (north from Tokyo to Aomori Prefecture) cost me about 9,000 yen one-way between Tokyo and Yamagata Prefecture... about 400km or so. Traffic during holidays (I know the US can be bad too)... it's ALWAYS bad... like 50km parking lot bad and the rest areas are packed because of this. Even on weekends the traffic is like 15-25km! All of it nationwide... going out of Tokyo in the beginning and coming back at the end.

Sorry to run on, but... I'm just tired of the Tokyo lifestyle.

Wow, I've never really gotten any inside info on life in Tokyo. I'd love to try it out, in fact, I'm most likely taking a semester abroad over there in 2 years, should be awesome. Not driving very often must be lame, but I guess it's the most economical thing to do, and probably easiest as well. Good luck coming back to the states, if you come to the NY area, you should drop by some of the meets. I haven't gone yet :o but I do plan on going to a few over the next few months.

Cool... thanks. Seeing as how I have family in NY I'll be passing through there at one time or another. Have to hookup then.

As far as studying abroad in Japan goes... you'll love it. I had a great time when I did for a semester. It really seemed too short. See the sights... temples, castles, museums, etc. Try to get a chance to visit a Japanese pottery class/studio, tea ceremony, martial arts, etc. Of course be sure to party too.

As a student studying abroad... stay away from driving. I speak from experience when I tell you that it's more money and trouble that you want to deal with. Speeding tickets will run you 15,000 yen, 50,000 yen, 120,000 yen (depending on speed... the higher ones requiring a court apperance). Traffic accidents... man... even the Japanese complain about the system. The police don't access the accident and assign fault. They are divided into two types... personal injury and property damage. Personal injury (when someone is hurt during the accident) will result in an investigation and court appearance. Property damage just has the police take a report and it goes to the insurance companies. They get a accident investigator to check it out and then there is negotiation about fault. Very rarely is 100% fault ever assigned. It's always divided between the two parties... 70/30 or so. The process is long, tedious and all in Japanese with terms I can guarantee they don't teach you in school.

Chitty, thanks for the advice. I didn't really plan on driving there anyway, but I will keep that in mind. If I can get my lazy *** up and running, I'd love to start a martial art up now. I can't choose one that I really want to do and/or find a good school close to Albany as of now. I'll get on that shortly though. Alright, time to end this hijack

most Americans don't know **** about handling...fortunately most of the guys on this forum do, Thank goodness! :D

I find this guy funny at times and I'm glad he loved the RX8, but at the same time I felt like punching the guy in the face after reading that.

He sounds like he is still mad we kicked the Brits out of this country, he is nothing but...like he said...some guy spewing out his opinion, nothing more.

Last time I checked all those other sport car companies he mentioned build cars that cost 10-20x more.

How ignorant can he be?

Hello, the new Vette is the best dang sports car in the world. I know that's just my opinion...but what it can do for it's price, NOTHING out there can match.

Also, look into the Vette and Viper…they have been kicking some serious butt in several races (no more details cause frankly I just don’t know what’s been going on recently)

So...I guess I know can see where this guy comes from. That article was pretty arrogant and insulting to American's in general. Maybe I'm being sensitive about it but he made himself to be a pompous jerk.

One life lesson...everyone has an opinion, some people get paid for theirs...but that does not mean it's worth the ink their garbage is printed on.

Comparing 80-200K cars to a 20-25K sports coup proves the point well enough.

Wow, what a jerk he sounded like...but I'll just put that into the memory bank and laugh at his rantings. I'll still watch the show...but I now see his opinion are basically useless, the most bias writer I've seen in a long time. I guess if you use enough big words and speak as if you are all knowing…that makes good entertainment.

END RANT!

Note: To our British friends...dont' mind me, I like you all...just not this particular Brit...
