Talking Corvette Drivers????

Maybe it is just me....but why does every corvette owner i pull up to at a light decide that he has to gun it at the green and smoke me. I know the rx8 has nothing for a vette. do these people mistake my car for a new vette? this guy today in a yellow one totally blew me away (as expected). i don't even give encouragment to these people (i.e. rev the engine). i guess some penises are smaller than others.

Maybe they like their cars. If I had a vette I would be gunnning it up to the speed limit from every light, regardless of whats beside me. People would be starting threads on forums all over the internet about me racing their corollas, 8's, pickup trucks, vespas etc.

Well if it was a C6, having 400hp on tap makes it aweful hard to keep your foot out of it. If the 8 had a 400hp 3 rotor you'd see a lot more 8 people doing the same.

Regardless, it takes someone with some pretty small nuts to taunt a car they know they can easily beat.

I used to drive a C5 and every coffee can tipped rice burner wanted to race me. The older the POS, the more ardent they were. Mostly -- and of course there are exceptions -- Corvette owners tend not to provoke street races with cars that clearly aren't directly competitive. Now, if you were on a track against a Vette, that would be different. Kind of like the difference between being a soldier and a non-combatant. :D

I've never had any issues with Vette drivers...they look over, take a good look...smile...and drive away.

Reminds me of a "sort of a race" I was in quite a few years ago.

Back then, I had just gotten out of college and had no money. I had an old beaten up Corolla. The car was rather peppy for what it was but you could not get it to 60 in less than 12 secs even if your life depended on it.

Anyway, on a warm summer evening, I stop at a red light on a deserted stretch of highway. Suddenly, this superb 911 turbo stops in the lane right next to me. The driver is middle-aged, is wearing a tux and he is accompanied by this pretty looking blonde woman in an evening gown. A wealthy businessman coming back from a soiree with his wife. They're pleasantly talking to each other and look rather relaxed.

I'm thinking "Well, there is relatively little chance that this guy will do a clutch dump, take off in a cloud of smoke and give me a good demonstration of what this Porsche can do. It would have been fun..."

It's at this moment that I have a rather... uhh... interesting idea: "Hey! This guy is going to take it pretty pretty easy with his wife in the car. This may be my only opportunity to take on a Porsche and win." I have a goal: to get to 60 before the Porsche.

I did not rev my engine or taunt the guy. I did'nt want to bother him and the whole thing was more of a fun thing to do for myself anyway.

And so... with a big grin on my face, thinking how silly this is, I wait for the green and drop the clutch at 3000 RPM. The tires don't even squeal but the car gets going faster than usual. I shift to second at the redline. The engine is screaming bloody murder but I am ahead. All through the second gear, I am looking in my mirrors and see that the Porsche is leasurely following at about 1 car length. He's probably wondering what the hell I am doing. As I get close to my goal of 60 and to the end of second gear, I hear this loud beautiful roar coming from behind me. I look in the mirror and see that the Porsche is not there anymore. It's in front of me! In fact, it's going so fast that 5 seconds later, it is farther from me than I am from the trafic light.

To this day, I have never out-accelerated a Porsche. I had a good laugh though. I'm sure he did too.

...and I was given a demonstration after all.

Maybe these rice burners revving their engine at you just want to see and hear what a Corvette can do.

haha.

On a couple of occasions I would wear my race suit and helmet while driving my 88 Jetta home from a track day. I usually drove my car to the track then drove someone elses car at the track, but the jetta was fun on the track too. People faces were priceless when they saw me pull up beside them. Of course I would stare them down, rev the engine and put my visor down in anticipation of the green. Then I would rocket off in a puff of black smoke. I wish I had some digital pictures of those days.

perfect description, most of these guys know they have no chance against a vette but they'd love to hear the roar and see the tire marks

I take off pretty briskly from whatever light I'm at, I go wot in my car many times a day. I bought the car to have fun in it, if people think I'm racing them then oh well. I also get a lot of people that seem to have the attitude that Rotule does, and get people inching up on me at lights daily. If I had a Vette it would be no different, I'd be accelerating hard away from lights and on the highway, simply because it's fun.

I've never had a problem with a vette driver with my 8...only Dosdge truck and SUV drivers.

I think they have been been drinking too much of the "Hemi" koolaid marketing campaign

I agree with Ike..I bought the car to have some fun so if I was driving a Vette I would nail it from every second light until I got the bill for my first set of replacement tires

I just bought my 8 3 days ago.. I had bought my wife a Mazda 6 about 6
months ago, and her 6 was such a nice auto I decided to go with a another
Mazda for myself..

Anyhow.. I was looking at a 05 vette they had sitting right next to the 8 I
ended up buying, I test drove the vette, loved the power, handling was
awesome.. of course the looks are nice... but I got to say.. theres no way
in hell I would pay $22000 more for it over the RX8..

If I ever encounter a vette wanting to drag or some shmuck just showing
off, Im just going to ask him if he can give me and a couple of my friends
a test drive with him.... see what he says then..

Or, I might just ask him how he likes his $650 car payment each month.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found a 1 week used 05 with 1800 miles on it, mint condition.. paid
$24,000 for it..while the other 05's being sold as NEW were going for
$34,000. I love whoever traded it in and ate all the depreciation on it
for me..

No extras though, cloth interior, no sunroof, single disk CD.. but it is
a MT, black, and looks bad as hell.. Most eye appealing car I have seen
for $30000 or less..bar none.

Ive had Camaro Z28s, Mustang GTs, and a few other sport coupes in
my time, but none are even close to being as fun as this car is..

Completely satisfied..

Well, the real question to me is.. If two rednecks in a vette buy a
case of pabst blue ribbon, where do they put it? Is the glove box
big enough?

Boy, there's a lot of truth on that! Maybe that's why everyone is always trying to get us to race in our '8s. Partially with the hope they can win, but if their car isn't fast (think Civic with giant wing and coffee can muffler and nothing else) and they know it, maybe they taunt us just to see how bad the '8 will smoke 'em. There's quite a bit of satisfaction in seeing a fast car run.

Hmmm... think you're on to something here - this never occured to me until now! LOL! :D

Whats with Americans and red lights?
Well if that was a Mustang or a Viper, I can make jokes about rocket powered 18 wheeler without power steering...

But its a Vette...
Bloody damn good car for any standard.

Cant say anything, just drool and admire the power and grace of the best American car made, today.

I've had some fun with a first generation Viper in my 8 just to see what it would do. I remember that being a pretty fun experience, because that Viper was freaking fast. After my 8 is warm, I take it to the beep in each gear until I reach the speed limit (and I still get 22 mpg :D), unless it is crowded. I would do the same thing if I owned any other sports car.

I agree, it doesn't get much better than that car for the money when you're talking about complete package. If you don't admire what Chevy has done with the Corvette, you're not looking close enough.

I mean the C6 has got MotorTrend picking it over a Porsche!?!?!?!

accelerating hard is fun, i never race though its really stupid. Like the other day a guy in a 1972 carrera cs (classic awesome porsche white with the blue lettering down the side and the integrated spoiler (predecessor whale tail)) and we just talked cars at the stop light and accelerated robustly not completely WOT just to hear the engines howl. ok that was kinda off topic now i want a vintage porsche.
