Discussion: Small displacement motors

I'm hoping somebody here will remember what I'm trying to think of.

I was having a discussion with one of the engineers I work with. He's kind of an old-school dragger, muscle-car type guy, whose of the opinion that unless it has a V8 it shouldn't be moving down the strip.

My argument was that if you don't care about reliability, and you've got enough money you can get the amount of power you want out of almost any motor.

I was thinking of an old, porsche 917 era le mans car that had something like a 1.0L (very turbocharged) motor putting out over 1,000hp.

Anyone remember what I'm thinking of?

Thanks guys
Bill

Formula 1 engines in the late 80's were 1.5L turbocharged that put out near 1500 hp in qualifying trim at 12,000 rpm.

Yah, but how much torque did it have?

American V8 muscle rules!!!

it's not the displacement of the motor, it's the amount of air/fuel passing through it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_917

it looks like it had a 4.5 liter 12 cylinder with big turbos putting out over 1500 hp in qualifying tune

but yeah, there are some insane turbo'd 4 rotor engines pumping out an amazing amount of hp

only idiots care about the displacement of engines when what really matters is mpg, and how much hp and tq it ultimately produces

Do you have a rotary?

If you do, you're basically ragging on yourself.. Ha.

The only reason you should care about displacement size is when they tax you based on that (like a lot of European and Asian country). In our current system, it's basically just something people to stroke themselves over

my statement goes both ways to people who think big displacement low rev is everything and to people who think small displacement high rpm is everything.

personally, i dont care about displacement.

i care about hp/tq, the area under the graph line (on both) and how smooth the engine runs.

This argument is a whole can of worms...

The truth remains there is no replacement for displacement. Face it, everything you can do to a small engine you can do to a big engine, correct?

So that little 2.5 liter turbocharged F1 engine running at it's limits making 1500-bhp could be bumped to, say, 7 liters and run meth and make 6,000-bhp like dragsters do. Of course dragsters live a 1/4 mile at a time but back then F1 engines in that tune were used for qualifying ONLY, so they only had to a live a handful of miles as well.

I always think it's funny when Supra guys talk about big power. The fact remains for the money they spent to get their 3.0 (or 3.3 if it's bored/stroked) straight 6 to make north of 1,000-rwhp they could have spent the same and gotten 1700-rwhp or more out of an LSX.

Don't get me wrong, I still love specific outputs, small lightweight engines that make a grip of power, etc, but the fact remains anything you can do to a small engine to increase power you can do a bigger engine and make more power.
