Do we have a heartbeat? (Ponti - Solstice)

The DeLorean Motor Company is apparently considering taking over production of the Pontiac Solstice.

While the specifics are still kind of murky, the movers and shakers (according to Heeb Magazine) at Jalopnik.com are reporting DMC has released these official renderings and purchased a Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe for evaluation purposes.

According to DeLorean's Vice President, James Espey, "JZD (John Zachary DeLorean) always said that the best memories of his automotive career were at Pontiac, and that connection between JZD and Pontiac is probably one of the better known associations among car enthusiasts." The company even hinted that they are excited about the possibility of "putting several hundred people back to work" at the Wilmington, Delaware factory where the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky was built.

As you may recall, the DeLorean Motor Company, producer of the 1981-82 DeLorean DMC-12, currently repairs classic DeLoreans and makes a limited number of second generation models. The DMC-12 was famous for its stainless steel exterior, gullwing doors and film role in the Back to the Future trilogy.

Although I've looked with keen interest at the maturation of the Solstice Coupe for several years, I wouldn't buy now given 1. the very limited production build and 2. Pontiac going the way of the Dodo.

We're in enough of a model-support niche with the RX-8.

I'm a huge fan of the Delorean! I think this would be a cool thing to see!

Yes, there is an actual DMC company that is based out of Texas I believe. I guess that there were a huge amount of parts that were discovered after John Delorean's business went under. We're talking about a warehouse size of parts. They have the ability to build you a 100% authentic 2nd generation Delorean for about $40,000 with 1982-83 parts. I know they also offer various modern upgrades to the vehicle.

Been there and got to see their facility! It's in Humble, TX...right outside of Houston.

/\ Lol. That's probably the lowest an automaker has gone in order to raise capital.

I think I've seen two DeLoreans in my life so far. That's less than the number of Ferraris, Lambos, and Lotuses (Lotii?) I've seen. I took out my camera and took a few photos of one I saw parked on the street, because they're so rare and strange. Check out that license plate.

As a DeLorean and RX8 owner, I think this is lame. I doubt it will come to fruition, its just a way to get media attention. Remember a few months/year ago in the news that they were going to make "new" DeLorean's....well they never did and never were, it was a way to get free media attention like this Solstice crap. What they really do is make "refurbished" DeLoreans....that are like-new, but still are vin'd and titled as a 1981, not a 2009. Which they've been doing since late 90s. Current price for a refurb is ~$57k.

I've only had my RX8 for 6 days, the DeLorean a year and a half.

Those drawings look waaaay better than the current Solstice, as they remove all traces of the "Grand Am" look that Pontiac stupidly puts on all of its cars.

It could work since GM would still be producing the ecotech for other cars like the Cobolt so you could get parts. Is GM going to sell DMC blocks etc at quantity discount and DMC just assembling GM parts w/ DMC bodies? The tranny is from Aisin. Body and suspension parts are cheaper to engineer and aftermarket knock-off parts could be available for less than OEM prices (a fact if youve ever had your car repaired by GEICO lol).
