Angry Drifting is annoying

I've been tooling around the forum via my dear friend, the search engine, and I did a search on my least favorite sport, other than women's basketball, drifting. What a surprise!! A slew of drifting-related material showed up in the results. Is it me or is drifting the most annoying sporting event in the world? Who wins these events? Whoever has the best skill, based on judgement, not a clock. That is as legit as a car show. The idea that it is a sanctioned sport is ridiculous. In fact, I'm thinking about watching a WNBA game...in person. Rewarding powerslides and out-of-control driving skills? At least Gymkhana is a race against the clock rewarding powerslides. I hope this thing is just a fad, like Veilside bodykits. Tsuchiya may have pioneered it, but the sanctioing bodies have ruined it. I hate drifting, and anything related to it, ESPECIALLY INITIAL D . Feel free to agree with me, or disagree. That's my opinion, and everyone should know. I feel better now .

I disagree. Drifting is a sport like figure skating is a sport. It is competitive in the artistic, rather than physical, sense. I think it's neato, and would love to find a beater so I could learn how to do it properly.

To each his or her own, I guess.

It's entertainment. Like monster truck shows and drag "racing."

I would say the figure skating vs. speed skating comparison is the most appropriate. I enjoy drifting for the same reason I enjoy WRC events--great car control at the extreme limits of traction. I agree the judging aspect is too subjective which is why I don't pay attention to that part. I know what I like and I simply enjoy the show.

Not only do i disagree with you strongly.

But i think you have some very strong mis-informed opinions.

You know that old saying about opinions though....

Save the tires,

Stop the drifting.

The only drifting I want to do is through the American Southwest.

Well said, damn fun to watch, and I could care less who wins. It's like freestyle autoracing, it's not who gets to the finish line first it's who does the most neat stuff while doing so.

Shelley's man, what do you think of sports like motox, freestyle snowboarding, skateboarding, biking, wakeboarding, etc? I get the feeling you're not all that fond of those and you need a finish line or a set in stone scoring system to enjoy a sport.

drifting is NOT sliding out of control

it's going sideways AT the threshold of control and see how long you can hold onto. it's fun, i want to try it sometimes

I get drifting, but I don't want it. As for extreme sports, barf. Surfing is cool, but do they have to make it a sport based on opinion, and not something rational, concrete? I'm just upset at the impact drifting is making. Now kids are doing illegal drift attempts in parking lots on Fridays. I think it's overglorified. Maybe the media blew it out of proportion, like Super Street. I remember they had some drifting articles dating back to, I believe, 2001. No one payed attention to it, but then it just started exploding as of recently, and now it's as popular, if not, more than AutoX, drag racing (I'll accept that), SCCA events, etc. It's a fad, and I hope it dies down before I see some Honda Civic plow into the Old Navy near my house.

If you think it's popular now just wait. Drifting hasn't even scratched the surface of the poplarity it will have in the next few years, and I think it's here to stay. Rap music was a fad, so were all the extreme sports I've mentioned according to people probably much like yourself. Drifting won't be dying out anytime soon.

I'm guessing you've never been to an event, force yourself to go to one and I bet you change your feelings on drifting. Dragracing tends to be similar as well, people who rag on drag racing have usually never been to a well put together event, it's damn fun even if you don't have a mullet and think F1 and WRC is the epitomy of motorsports! :D

OMG.... why so many people turning up against DRIFTing?! i mean its ok not to view it as a "sport" but why is it STUPID?? b/c a skill u don't have?? drifting takes too much skills or talent to be stupid... if u even KNOW how to drift.... u would sure not think its stupid but fun... it is as chanllenge as any "TIMED" lap race... plus its a "SPORT" in Japan for YEARS!!!! be4 the America even get a taste of it....
if drifting is stupid.... i think there nothing out there more retarded then nascar!! (IMO) i mean just circling a track for hundreds of lap?!?!!!???? i mean a "CIRCLE"?!?!?!!!!

What? This is where the problem is. Everyone thinks they're right. I know I'm not 100% right about drifting being a sport. I'm just expressing my personal opinion. A skill I don't have? What is this the RX-7 forum? I think if you want to talk about bragging rights and "who got skillz," then talk to the FD boy racers. Personally I hate NASCAR. I don't see the appeal. I also don't see the appeal of drifting as a sport either. I don't like it, and nothing is going to make me change how I feel. I'm going to assume you don't know how to drift either, since you're making an attempt to bash me. Nice try bro'. If you like drifting, that's fine. Enjoy your Initial D DVDs. Frankly, I don't care, and I'm not going to start some Internet war about it.

I think its the atmosphere that makes these events timeless. It's like baseball; you won't get the full effect watching an Astros game on FOXSW. I'm not paying $5.00 to watch a team lose .

i thought only people that drive FWD cars "HATED" drifting?!?! its the only reason i sold my eclipse and bought an 8. and what did you think was going to happen when you denounce a way of life for so many people? i think your just mad because one day you woke up and a D1 car was on the cover of your sport compact......and you probably said to your self what the hell is drifting. iv followed it for the last 5 or 6 years. back when you had to buy a hole mag for one half page artical about drifting. and now im in heaven because the publishers finaly woke up and realized what sells:D just fess up and tell every one that you hit something the first time you tried it....its going to be ok, we will forgive you to everyone else that thinks the way i do....i would love to hear all of your drifting stories in the compatition(racing)...drifting your RX8.......part of this forum

Yea. I think its sliding out of control then takeing control of the drift and thats what makes drifting. Like in the movies. I have always wonted to try it to. Its to bad I did not get a M/T in my 8. Then I could go to the LVMS and drift with the drifters. Or was that a group?... Oh well.

Good gravy xSxxKxxYx !! Could you write in a language that's remotely English? Jeez. Drifting has been around since before I was an idea. Anyways, in case you haven't heard, or have the reading ability of a lawn chair, I don't like drifting. I explained my reasons. Where's yours? I'm not just singleing (?) you out xSxxKxxYx. I don't like drifting because it's attracting the wrong kind of people; now the Fast and Furious crowd has switched lanes, so to speak. Now everyone is into D1 and other drifting sanctions, even though they don't have a shred of knowledge about "demon camber," or even making decent power. People who own FWD cars hate drifting? That's laughable. IMO, people with FWD cars are usually the ones trying to drift, at least where I live. Then when they realize their front tires are the first to break traction, they give up and cry. They long for even a 240SX (groody), just for the RWD. They don't hate drifting, they're jealous. I guess people will follow the Pied Piper wherever he goes. First it was drag racing, then JGTC, and now drifting. Like I said, the media LOVES to blow things out of proportion. If you expose a crappy song long enough, people are going to like it. Maybe drifting is here to stay. Know what? I don't care. It's not a sport, it's a driving technique. Tsuchiya mastered it, sanctioning bodies ruined it. I'm going to say this again and again until you non-believers get it. What I would love to see is someone who has the "drifting gift" beat those pesky C5-R's at Daytona, Sebring, or if they're really that good, Le Mans. My opinion is drifting is NOT a sport. Your opinion is drifting IS a sport. More opinions please ...
