Edmunds: 2010 MS3 beats Genesis Coupe 3.8
Sounds like it was a pretty clear cut victory for the MS3. Similar comments I have read about the Mazdspeed3, an evolution of the previous car, but an even better car due to improved handling and driveability. Wish the RX Series would go through a redesign sooner than later.
Conclusion to the article:
The Right Angle
Increasingly, that perspective is from behind the wheel. Mazda's hyperactive hatch wins the fun-to-drive portion of this contest hands-down. Sure, it gives up a few tenths in acceleration, but the results are close enough that it would still be a driver's race at a stoplight drag race. Handling tests both go easily to the Mazda as well.
But the final nails in the coffin are price and practicality. With a $4,500 price gap to overcome, the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 needs to dominate every other category to win this contest. And it did win the feature content segment of this comparison by offering heated seats, four-piston brakes, rear-wheel drive and less costly regular fuel — a nice bonus every time you hit the pump.
But those perks aren't enough to take down the ultra-sharp, hugely practical and wildly entertaining 2010 Mazdaspeed 3. And it would be obtuse to ignore the Mazda's practical advantages as an only car — which both of these machines will be for most buyers.
And that, friends, is why the Mazdaspeed 3 wins this comparison. Its credentials in kicking *** and taking names were well established before this contest and it's a better car now than it was before.
We'll add one more name to the list.

On paper these 2 cars are in a different league. The Genesis 3.8 SHOULD be competetive with other 300hp RWD coupes but it just isnt (which is prob why they are goin against FWD with less hp). Did you see it get MURDERED by the Stang GT? Wasnt even a contest, got beat in pretty much every category. And here they put it up against FWD 266hp hatchback and it gets beat down once again (granted the MS3 is no slouch). What now? A comparison with more FWD pocket rockets like the GTI? Civic SI? Please. Stay in the RWD 300hp range league and keep gettin whooped, better than looking even worse by gettin handled by a FWD hatch.

go check out the genesis coupe forums, they're having problems with getting it to evo like performance because it is in not an evo engine, just certain parts of it is. The limit they are finding for the bottom end is about 300-350whp, which of course the evo can easily handle.

I drove the Genesis 3.8 track and I may be in the minority but I didnt think it was half bad. Should the loaded track model be 30k...No. I have a couple of main complaints about the Genesis, but I honestly like this more than the Camaro I test drove. I haven't tested a Mustang so I cant make that comparison. I would consider the Genesis for my next car but it's more likely Ill end up in a 370z.

What's funny is that every time I read a review of the Speed3 I have to go out and drive my car for a little while and appreciate it. I so seldom get to drive it just for fun that I tend to forget what I have.
'Scuse me, I'll be back soon. :D

I, myself, was interested in the Genesis until I discovered that the LSD, bigger brakes and sport suspension were only available in the limited track edition. Otherwise the car itself was not going to compare in performance to anything Mazda has between the MS3, RX8 or even the Speed6 even though it's not made anymore.
It's a car that some people in the industry are claiming will become a popular car to modify but I just don't see it to be honest. The turbo version needs serious coaxing to get to the power levels of the V6 but the V6 is apparently very pushy in corners.
The aftermarket for the MS3 is probably going to be much better. The COBB AP opens up huge doors for any kind of FI upgrades and the platform is already a solid performer.
If I had to put my money somewhere between these two cars I'll take the MS3 every time.

I think the Genesis is not bad considering it's the first attempt ever by the Koreans at anything resembling a sporty car, but I think they are going be playing catch-up for quite a while, considering Mazda has been making sports/sporty cars for decades, beginning with the original Cosmo in the 1960s.

The Genesis looked good on paper, but I think it just hasn't delivered up to its specs. Neither version seems to perform all that well.
With the base Mustang getting the new DI V6, it's just going to get worse.

Mazda needs to re-make the MS6...
On topic - Although the 3.8 coupe was trounced by the Mustang, putting it up against the MS3 is really silly. I would imagine the 2.0T would be a better match for the MS3, since that one was marketed as the sporty, cheap, turbo little funbag from Hyundai.

the market for a hotted up mainstream sedan/driving appliance just isn't there in the US. otherwise we would've gotten all the good stuff a long time ago, such as the accord type r, galant vr4, legacy 2.0gt spec.b/or sti, etc. subaru tried also w/ the last legacy, and even w/ the fabulous wagon nobody bought into it

very true. but i loved it, and i still want one. and i like that they're rare, and hence pretty cheap used

Unfortunately, when I come into the market as a family man looking for a AWD sleeper that looks good, the MS6 won't be there for me
