The eight might have to go.. I need some help

What the f* am I going to do. Basically I cant afford to insure this car anymore... infractions up the ***. At this point I'm pretty sure I can only afford liability no matter what kind of car I have so I need something that isn't going to put me out 20k if I make a stupid *** mistake and ramp into some trees or something.

My problem is what the hell can I go into after driving this car that won't feel like a complete turd. What kind of car could I buy that doesn't suck (isn't fwd), comes in stick, and has a good community (nothing honda). Ya I know... million dollar question, but I have to assume that other people on here have thought about it before.. and have to have some idea.

Basically my question is this... If you couldn't have your eight anymore, what would you be able to put up with instead (especially if you could throw money at it)?

ps. if anyone calls dibs on my parts im going to cry

MX-5. It's RWD, stick shift, near-bulletproof, and there are a million and a half cheap used ones out there. And you can go topless. Plus their forums put ours to shame.

Or, if you need more than two seats, there's plenty of mustangs out there. a '99-'04 GT has some get-up-and-go, it's RWD and plenty are available in manual, and corral.net is about the biggest car forum there is.

Then there's Subura WRX's, or an FC 7, or a Nissan 300ZX, or an older M3... the possibilities are endless if you're willing to buy used.

What is your budget for buying a car outright - so you dont have to finance it (and get full insurance)

Anyway - i would suggest getting an FC or S13
If you can afford more... an FD or S14

The RX7 is going to be a lot more maitenance than the nissans.

240SX, MKII MR2, first gen DSM, and Miata all come to mind. All can be had for under 10k and all are fun and at least somewhat moddable. If you've got a little more money an 02-03 WRX or maybe WS6 Trans Am or V8 Camaro.

Ike,
The guy obviously has issues with driving within the "limits of the law," and your advice is a lanundry list of cars that will either raise his premium all to be damned or get him locked up.

Xantium,
In all seriousness...of Ike's list, the Miata, MR2, & 240 may be the cheapest to insure. Also I agree with Staticlag and say you should get yourself an nice used 600CC bike and maybe something like a used Miata. That way you don't have to get full coverage and you'd still have fun toys. Me, I'll be shopping for a sedan, SUV, or minivan within the next couple of weeks. Maybe an Odyssey or G35 sedan. If I have to sell my 8 (which looks like a very real possibility) I'd love to "have it my way" and get either a Evo X, 350Z, STi, or that new Dodge Challenger, just to mix things up and try different flavors...but who am I kidding. I had my cake--I can't eat it too.

I would think about the lexus IS. I test drove one, and if it came in manual, it would have been competition for the rx8 (sort of). the paddle shifters are weird, i think.

I agree with myriadshalaks. have a friend that has one (IS350). they are really nice. had plenty of room in the back. the sport suspension would have to be a must though.

I think you should get the dullest, boringest econobox you can find, and live with it until you calm down and your driving record cleans up.

Walk. Cheap Life Insurance is the only thing that you'll need. Covers like a million bucks.

My brother paid $1800 for a 1984 VW Rabbit GTI. He has a company truck for work, so reliability wasn't a factor in his purchase, but he drives it hard, has a blast with it, and it has been very reliable for him. We have done a number of spirited drives together and I can say for a fact it does very well in the twisties, despite being a FWD. It is geared very well and has plenty of torque for a lightweight car. You would NEVER guess it only has 95 HP!

me i would either go with 90-98 miata, some version of an s12 or s13, first gen Lexus IS ( think first gen Lexus IS is auto though ) and if i FF car, i like 90's VW Golf because it reminds me of Toyota Starlet Turbo. Good luck though. Also like others had said, have you tried other INS companys and maybe up your Comp and Collision. hope your driving habits improve also.

I hear Legacy's are cheap to insure. You should just call your ins. man and I'm sure he can tell you which cars are cheaper to insure. Also, if you adjust things around, im sure you can make your insurance cheaper. I have a DUI on my record and I can still afford insurance. If you raise your deductable to $1000, it will lower things alot. You'd be screwed on a minor fender bender but it would still be there if you got into something serious.

If you want to stay rotary get an FC, they are more reliable then the FD and cheaper too. I have a 91 FC that had 200k on it before the engine was replaced due to someone dumping sugar into the tank, then a Mazda dealer not knowing what the hell they were doing and replacing the engine instead of checking the fuel pump.

Pickup trucks are the cheapest thing you can insure. Get an old truck and slow your *** down.
