My friend drove a sport AWD today. He was VERY impressed by the handling and ride. He said the interior quality and ergonomics is quite good for an entry level CUV. Power is adequate, but leaves room for improvement.
He is an avid Audi and BMW enthusiast (owner of a Q5 and 335d) and has test driven quite a few other cars. He beat me to it, but if my friend can say he was impressed with the CX-5, I think I will be too. I can't wait!

I never in a million years would have believed I'd ever consider driving a CUV given the high center of gravity and flavor-of-the-day trend, but if Mazda made the diesel version of the CX-5 available stateside, I'd definitely drive it and buy it if it met my expectations in terms of acceptable road manners and quality.
I will not resort to buying a VW product to get an efficient diesel, after past experiences with VWs, as well as knowing of family and friends' past experiences with VWs.
I do not understand the hesitation on the part of Japanese automakers in providing diesel motor options for North America.

This is also why VW had a hard time selling ANYTHING Diesel to the US --- their Diesel is pretty good but no one buys them.
not to mention all the agreement between oil companies and auto makers (just my opinion), so they will try to avoid ANYTHING that will save them gas.
Mazda as a mid-small size auto company, simply cannot afford too much risk, especially after how much they lost last year.
they just want to use Sky-G as test mule/advertizement first, let people know that they have cool cars with cool engines that gives out cool mpg all possible without the gay look of Prius(that's what some people think of Prius) and Expensive Drivetrain replacements (most people afraid of hybrids cuz of the battery, even tho the battery actually last for the life of the car, they don't know)
as more people pay attention to their products, that's when they release Sky-D.

As I see it more must be said about "what is" Skyactiv, how does it benefit the Buyer?,,,
Skyactiv IS the stand out #1 feature of the CX-5 which separates it from all other small SUV's.
I think there is better to come (I hope so), so far to me it looks a little too 'kiddie'.
Will a family of young children inspire mom or dad to buy a CX-5?

When it comes to Diesel use, It's a well known fact that MOST Americans still living in their 50's 60's, they thought Diesel is only for trucks, it's ugly, and it's dirty.
This is also why VW had a hard time selling ANYTHING Diesel to the US --- their Diesel is pretty good but no one buys them.

GoAuto Australia reports on CX-5 long road test ...usually they say it as it is and gets it right..
It is WORTH reading...also click on "Our Opinion " page link.
WHY Mazda Australia have not launched the more powerful 2.2 SA Diesel at the same time beggars belief..obviously production capacity...it will be here on sale in a few weeks.
Now, though, its cheaper, shorter and more upright CX-5 successor has surfaced, with intent to ‘hit the SUV sweet spot’ according to Mazda – and that sounds an awful lot like a threat to bore us.
But we needn’t have worried because once again Mazda has shown us how to do an SUV with style.
Mazda has good reason to feel confident that its saviour has finally arrived.

PLUS...a 2.5 SA-G Engine!
Developed primarily for the US market version of the CX-5, the still-secret 2.5 will be unveiled in the first quarter of next year, with Australian sales expected to follow soon after.
Also destined for the all-new small SUV series is a smaller-capacity SkyActiv-D turbo-diesel to complement the new 129kW/420Nm 2.0-litre unit.
Devised with the European market in mind, this ultra-low-emission engine is believed to be of 1.5- or 1.6-litre capacity, enabling a special lightweight eco version of the CX-5 to slip beneath the 100 grams per kilometre carbon dioxide pollution threshold.

Let me guess, it will have at LEAST 200 hp and 200 ft lbs of torque, right ?
Not a bad thing. but consider the CURRENT 2.0 SkyActiv-G gets "only" 31 mpg hwy for the AWD GT model ...
if their 2.5 SkyActiv-G gets higher hp and same mpg numbers, it WILL **** a lot of "current" 2.0 SkyACtiv-G customers off
if it's higher power but lower MPG, depends on how much lower we're talking about. it will STILL **** a lot of current owners off ...
I might as well just ask Honda to bring their K24A powered Mini-Van over to the state. it gets good mpg and decent amount of power WITHOUT the wait.
