Thanks Dinhx8! I've actually been toying with the idea of a used RS6 or E39 M5 but, as you probably already know, Audi never brought the RS6 wagon to the USDM. I'll check out the S4 wagon. Thanks again.
Dehli...like I said, blind. There never has been a rear wing. Grown-ups are talking now so pipe down.

From another evo owner
Keep your 8 man...You will lose ALOT of money and you WILL miss your car and its power and handling. I have thought of letting my 9 go, but damn I just can't. It does not make any sense.
Look like you have invested TON of money and time on your 8 and though not as much so am I. All that time and money will be gone and will not come back.
My 02 and dunno if you remember but you and Ike helped me decide to buy my 9, so I would hate to see you letting go your evo.
Best of luck
Ray

It's been a year plus but I've got some news for anybody who cares. I ended up selling the LGT wagon last April and kept the Evo. I'd bought the Subie to be a daily driver but it became to much to carry 3 notes when my wife stopped working. So anyways she found a PT job that allowed her to work from home 3 days per week last summer so I pretty much just used her FX35 Tues, Wed and Thurs and drove the Evo Monday and Friday. To make a long story short, I got a killer job offer last month but it meant a ton of driving during the week. Rather than take her SUV and leave her and our 2 kids with an Evo she can't even drive (she can't drive stick) I killed two birds with one stone last week. I traded in the '05 VIII RS on a '10 X MR Touring.
I'll miss the manual tranny and the raw, tossable, lighter VIII but in the end I got a safer more practical car with 75% of the performance I had before. The drivetrain electronic wizardry is pretty slick too. Still breaking it in but I've pushed it HARD through the canyons and it feels unbelievable for a stock suspension.
Thanks to the people who mentioned some other cars to look at. In the end it came down to three cars: a used '09 Caddy CTS-V, Pontiac G8 GXP and the Evo X. The Caddy was just too much money when you consider it's used and it will inevitably depreciate like any other GM. That thing is stupid fast though and uber stealth. The Pontiac was awesome...an amazing car...but the AT was poop, it didn't have NAV and who the hec knows what or how Pontiac's extinction would complicate things from a potential service perspective. I looked at some other cars...Infiniti G37 sedan was boring as sin, my head hit the ceiling in the Lexus IS-F (used '08 for $41k) and the 335i was just too much from a "true cost" of ownership considering the high miles I'd be putting on it.

Good pick on the Evo X MR Touring. Helluva nice car, regardless.

I'd promised my wife an AT this time around so that's why I only checked out the G8 GXP in an auto. If a manual transmission wasn't an issue I would have looked at a lot more cars...Audi RS4, used E60 M5, etc. No complaints about the dual clutch setup on the Evo so far. If I go off the deep end with the power mods again on this Evo I'll need to invest in the drivetrain though. After about 350ft/lbs of torque the clutch plates start slipping. That's a ways off though...I think.
