Thumbs down EVO VIII: Bought It, Hated It. For Sale

Hi gang,

YOu guys surprised to see me back? Don't be. I bought my 2003 Evo VIII last week and have already put almost 800 miles on it with 1 long trip and a normal week of daily driving. Sure, the car is trick and fast and all the things that look good on paper, but there are 2 things that the car is missing that I just can't stand:

1) No Style
You all said it before, so go ahead and say "I told you so". The Evo is nice, but it looks like any old JDM econo-box, even if it does have Ferrari 360 performance levels.

2) No Cruise Control
Who thought this was a good idea?! One long 8 hour round trip in that car was enough for me. What idiots don't put cruise control on a car. I didn't find out about it until after I already bought it.

So, EVO is for sale at Dealer Invoice if any of you others are interested in owning one. Great car. The kids love it. But if you need cruise control and a dose more style, then I would opt for something else...

So, anyone get an RX-8 in the US yet?

they should be here next week!!!
hell you shold have waited a little longer a few more thousand miles and you wil have to buy brakes and tires! brakes are $300. and tires are $350. each(factory). i work at a mits dealer and no they are not covered by warranty! that was ne major problem with evo that i have seen and heard. i personally didnt like the ook. it looks like any 4 door with a big wing on it. no persality.
so are you going to get a rx-8 now or shop around a little more or??

i've never liked the evo, i've always been a big scooby fan though, but i have one question, is that car lineup in your sig for real, if so why would you buy an evo?

8 cars in the last 2 years and 20 cars in the last 8 years... so sig is for real. Check out:

2002 BMW M3 Convertible
and
2002 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo
can't forget
1996 Porsche C4S

Ok, now back to why I would buy an EVO. First off, it looks good on paper. 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, 60-0 in 106 ft. And faster throught he slalom course than the Ferrari 360 and on par with it for the 0-60 and 60-0. This car is FAST!!!! The EVO is clearly faster than my 2000 Acura NSX and seems even faster than my 2002 BMW M3. It even seems to handle better under 80 mph than the 911 Turbo. It is a wicked fast car and setup really nice. If performance is your only criteria, then the EVO has that in bucket-fulls. With the EVO now past the break in range, it is even faster and getting faster all the time.

Too bad it is too damn ugly for its own good... and it should be a crime to leave off cruise control. The "20 somethings" over on the EVO list don't have much sympathy for those of us pushing 40 that want to buy and EVO. Some of them didn't even realize the car didn't have cruise control. Oh well, to be 20 and stupid again...

I agree the new ones are pieces of ****, don't know why Tyrese is driving a purple one in the movie... I would have rather seen a pinto... back to my point, the 1G's and 2G's were remarkable cars. Boost controller and an intercooler, you were dipping into the low 13's, high 12's with the GSX's(TSi's for Talons).

G-MAN Having owned all of the above cars for such short periods ,and finding that none of them got your rocks off what makes you feel that the rx8 will please your tastes ,you seem to be a hard man to please, maybe taking flyng lessons will solve your need for speed.

G-man, those are awesome pictures and a kickass collection of cars that you listed.

But I, like most reasonable citizens, am left wondering: WTF??

Care to share your background, and how it is that you chew through so many cars? Are you running your own one-man dealership?

Mazda UK unfortunately (it's not even available as an option on the RX-8 here).

Sounds like you've gotten a little soft You really are a difficult customer to please. I'd suggest you take up motorcycling, but you'd probably find something to dissatisfy you there too.

I agree with Schneegz. If you want looks and performance, you should try the Ducati or MV Agusta. Unless, of course, you lack the skill or cojones to ride one.

This is a similar problem I experienced when I drove the 350Z.

It just wasn't as fun to drive because of the lack of 'invitation' in the cabin... it really set me apart from being 'one with the car.'

The G35C was much better in that respect because of a better cabin layout and more relaxed feel thruout... I really felt better driving it.

That's why when I sat in the RX-8 at the Auto Show, I know I'll be happy in the inside... time will tell whether or not I'll be happy with the performance but given my criteria... I should be okay.

That's kind of why I wouldn't buy an Evo or STi. The interiors are so cheap looking for a $30k car. I don't care if people say "you're not paying for that, you're pay for performace..." If I'm paying that much money, I expect a certain level of quality in terms of refinement and luxury. I might as well spend $10k less and get a SRT-4. The RX-8 interior looks nicer than a G35 interior. Hopefully, I'll be able to test drive or at least be able to sit in a RX-8 sometime soon. Wellesley Mazda said middle of July.

The RX-8 won't satisfy me either, but I like that "new car" smell.

I never said that I didn't like any of the cars, I like them all for different reasons for different things. If I could afford to have 6 cars they would be:

1) SUPERCAR: 2001-2003 Porsche 911 Turbo x50 ($180,000)
The instant "Rock Star" status is awesome. Performance is staggering! If you ever get the chance to own one, even for a month, I highly recommend it!

2) 2 SEATER SPORTS CAR: 1997-2000 Acura NSX-T ($92,000)
This is the most comfortable driving car I have ever owned. Not really all that fast, not really all that great handling, but best driver position short of a Formula 1 race car!

3) LUXURY SEDAN: 1998-2002 BMW 750iL ($136,000)
This car can carry 4 adults and 2 weeks of luggage and still cruise at 150+ mph on the highway and be rock solid. It is simply amazing. The rear seats are heated and recline! Now that is luxury.

4) CONVERTIBLE: 1999-2003 Mazda Miata ($24,000)
This car has go-cart like handling and is lots of fun with the top down. It even beats out the Porsche Boxster in the "fun to drive" category.

5) MID-SIZED SUV: 2001-2003 Acura MDX ($41,000)
This vehicle handles more like the Acura NSX than you would ever think possible for a vehicle that sized. It seats 7 and it is the only car that I have had for more than 2 years since my 1972 Datsun 240Z that was a Bob Sharp Racing restoration.

6) LUXURY SUV: 1998-2002 Range Rover ($68,000)
This vehcile can go ANYWHERE and before Cadilac got into the SUV game, every old school rapper had to have one in black with 20" wheels. These are amazing vehciles off-road. If you ever get the chance to take the Land Rover Off Road Driving School, I would suggest you do that. It is loads of fun!

Ok, so that is my list. $541,000 of cars at MSRP. You can buy all of them right now on eBay for about $250,000 total. You also need a 6 car garage and lots of dough for insurance... but given the fact that you can't drive them all at the same time, you can reduce coverage in some. Some of you will notice that there is NOT a Ferrari on the list. Well, they are awesome, but not very practical. The 911 Turbo and the NSX fill both ends of the Ferrari Gap for me. Well, just in case any of you cared.

Well, there are 2 primary reasons why I buy so many cars:

1) Am guess I am looking for the ultimate single vehicle that can be used in a variety of situations, allow for summer and winter use, carry the wife and kids, and yet still be a lot of fun at the race track. Maybe the new Audi RS6 will do the trick.

2) The other is that I have to have something to do with my time and money. I figure that I don't cheat on my wife, I don't beat my kids and I don't do drugs, so I have to have some kind of "vice", so buying cars seems to be mine.

I hate to think what I have spent in cars over the last 20 years, but with over 30 cars now in 20 years, it is substancial for sure. Well over $250,000 over 20 years, you still only get an average of $12,500 per year or just over $1,000 per month... not bad for the experience or for the bragging rights.

That is OK, they already flamed me for being almost "40" and still buying a "kids" car. I felt like the Trix Rabbit... "Silly G-man, EVOs are for kids!" Oh well. Flame On!

Hey G-man; I found your problem:

1998 BMW K1200 RS
Claimed dry weight: 586 lbs
Claimed wet weight: 628 lbs
Power in 1998 was 130hp @ 8750rpm, with torque of 86 ft. lbs

Don't get me wrong, the BMW is a great MC and I would love to have one just to cruise around, but there are much better performing MC out there.

No offense, G-Man, but as someone who has purchased a multitude of cars, I think you should have known about the looks (and your opinion of them) and the lack of cruise control. The lack of cruise control is a nuisance, rather than a deal breaker for me (I've never owned a car with cruise control..so I'm used to it).

I am torn between the RX-8 and a 1999 911. Can you help!!

Was there anything NOT to like about the 911? Of course I will not be getting the Turbo. Just the run of the mill coupe :o) If there is such a thing....

Thanks,

sorry to hear about the Evo...i didn't want to be mean and call the car ugly cuz you seemed to have fallen in love with it...IMO, the STi is much better looking but still not a beautiful car...and looking at your past purchases, NSX/911/M3, you know beautiful cars...i was pretty amazed that you bought the Evo or even considered it at all...

IMO, your car is the 360 Modena...it is THE most beautiful car and peforms, like you said, on par with the Evo which is why you bought that car in the first place...sure it's not practical, it can't take the wife AND kids at the same time, and much more money than the Evo or RX-8, but at least you'll be happy...besides, you have other cars to lug the family around, they're just extra baggage in the 360!

PS - later on if you don't want it, you can always just give it to me...i'm sure i probably wouldn't mind an "even" trade for my 8
