G-Man, I got a suggestion. You said you like AWD and Turbos, and you also seem to like the Porsche style. How about the Audi TT Quattro (225 hp) coupe. It isn't gonna be insanely fast, but it looks like it gets the job done plus it's a 4 seater with full rear seat although tight, but it has style, AWD, a turbo, and a somewhat decent amount of trunk room - especially if you put one or two of the rear seats down. Or you could chill and wait for the Audi TT 3.2 DSG that comes out in the fall that is gonna have that really cool 6 speed transmission with the multiple modes on it. I am heavily considering the TT as my next car, it's got style, AWD, lots of trunk space since I don't need the rear seats, and it's a sports car I could use in sun, rain and blizzards :D (as I have seen done by the people on an Audi TT board).

You bring up a good point. I actually drove one and almost bought one, but there is a 3.2 liter coupe coming next year that will be a real Porsche 911 killer. The back seats are a little too tight to get the kids in and out of on a regular basis if I want us all to travel. But, it is another splendid example of all-wheel-drive and turbo charged for sure!

Yeah, there are 2 cars that I have always wanted to own, but could never bring myself to get past the lack of decent ergonomics on the interior...

1) C5, C6 or Z06 Corvette
2) Mustang Cobra, SVT or R

Ford and Chevy both have a real problem with the interiors in these cars. Now, don't get me wrong, the EVO has its drawbacks in being cheap and flimsy, but it is PERFECTLY layed out. The RECARO seats go a long way toward making any car livable, and the EVO is no different. That is why I almost bought a Mustang R when they came out, since they had a Recaro Interior. The Corvette and Mustangs both have new versions in 2005, so we will see if they get any better. I would love to have a Mustang, but they don't handle well enough for me without serious modifications. Of course the SALEEN Mustangs are a breed apart and are fairly rare, exclusive and numbered, so I may spring for one of those is 2005 trim.

welcome back g-man!

it is good to have you back on this forum, as others have said, you give good insight and put a bery real twist on things, as well as offering quasi-intelligent conversation lol!

you want something, safe, faste, AWD, and family driveable eh?
how about that new volvo s60r?

around 42-43g fully loaded, 0-60 in 5.4, a volvo, so you KNOW its safe. yak yak yak...do what you really want, and get an rx-8!

btw, flying isnt really all that fun, i find it rather boring, although it can get kinda kool if you go into a CRAZY steep bank, but otherwise its kinda lame, i mean, its fun, but theres no rush, unless you get a jet or trick plane or something, then you can get crazy

I met Peter at a couple of the Mazda Club events and we have run VIR together. I was aware of the IS300, but hadn't remembered that he had worked his magic on them. I like the EVO fine enough for now, but I bet that is a nice car for my situation. Thanks for the thoughts.

I said this on 6/2 and I'm gonna say it again...

"WRX SUX

No, really, a tin box with a hood scoop? No thanx! I don't care HOW fast the little piece of...

Nuf said."

That goes for the EVO VIII too.

it's all a matter of taste. Some ppl want a car that will go 0-60 in <5 secs and can tolerate the rubbermaid interior.

LOL! Yep! Rubbermaid interior - good one.

This truly is a matter of taste. Even if I were to be looking for a speedracer, those two STILL wouldn't make the mark. They're still a compromise car. That being performance/affordability. I would drive a POS around & save-up to get what I really want. I just gotta laugh when I see one (of either). They're a joke! Oooh, see how fast I can go? Big deal! There's a lot of cars that are faster, so what's the point? Surely not the looks! Yuk!

Just my $.02 and also, the initiator of this thread, obviously. That's why I thought I would repeat myself.

Drive one and see. Read just about any EVO or Top Gear Magazine article about the EVO or the STI in the last 10 years and note the descriptions about the experience and driving dynamics. Of course, you seem to know much more than these guys.

I know the thrill and exhileration of riding a rollercoaster too, but I wouldn't like to take one to work every day. I don't have to drive one to know that I personally don't want one. I just have to look at cars like these to make that decision. They tried to dres them up, but they still are tin boxes with hood scoops to me. No class. Technologically going into the tunnelvision of speed. Whoo! They're an eyesore to me and that's all I gotta know. I have better things to do than to be bothered with knowing about cars that I have no interest in from the first moment I laid my eyes on them. First impressions count, and from what I picked up here and there about them, such as this thread, nothing has increased my interest in them. Maybe a little bit faster than the RX-8, so what!

Its a niche car, so if you don't like it, no big deal. However, I wouldn't pre-judge a driver's car without driving it first. In another thread you said you stopped by the Mitsubishi dealer, so why don't you take another 10 minutes and drive it?

I'm going to my Mazda place to see an RX-8 (not test drive - got 4 in/4 sold - 1 car being held with permission of new owner so they can show it). That's why I happened to just stop in yesterday at the Mitsi place around the corner - I was going by the Mazda place to look for the 4 RX-8's. 3 were already gone & didn't notice the 1 inside - rats. Going to see that 1 today. I might go back to Mitsi to maybe test drive an Evo VIII if my wife will put up with it.
I never said anything bad about the performance. I think I already gave it my nod that it's a very good performer, based on other reviews. I didn't want to put miles on a new car, knowing that I won't be buying one. I just might though. I want my wife to see one & if this time a salesman decides to talk to us, I'll be feeling him out to see how much he wants us to drive one. If he does, I will, no doubt then. Maybe I will still be able to get the $100 out of it too. I already signed for the RX-8 though (due in @ end of August).

The $100 deal does not apply to the EVO.

Yes it does. They had the sticker for it on the drivers door glass.

Too bad it is too damn ugly for its own good... and it should be a crime to leave off cruise control. The "20 somethings" over on the EVO list don't have much sympathy for those of us pushing 40 that want to buy and EVO. Some of them didn't even realize the car didn't have cruise control. Oh well, to be 20 and stupid again...
Not to be an *** or something, but people who are 20 and getting evo's are very happy.... There not thinking there stupid... I mean dude your what in your late 40, or 50's and from the sound of it your not happy.... Your story is just another tale of money cant buy happiness. ... You should have looked at the car as second time, which maybe you did or didnt. http://forum.evolutionforums.com/zerothread?id=261

this was posted later that day by you.... So whats the deal is the EVO crap or great!!!!!! Enjoy what you have, dont worry about the flaws so much. Next time make sure you get what you want before you buy it.

once again I didnt mean to be an *** but still. Whats going to make you happy????

GMan - Why are you buying and selling so many cars??? Stick with something for a bit instead of just running to the next new thing.... Your EVO might have grown on ya - you never know

MY Car: Titanium RX-8 GT

Really growing on me and I have had Miatas for the last 10 Years... Still love the miata - I have a 99' in the garage now.

Hey G-Man,

Off the topic, but is that your NSX in front of the Greenbriar in WV?

Why don't you get Petit Racing to build you one of those 550hp Banzai FD RX-7's, that should keep you interested for a few months.:D

Too bad the Evo didn't work out for you. I haven't made my car purchase yet, but I'm heavily leaning toward the RX-8 (which is why I registered here). Since I live in Colorado, I am also considering the Evo and the STi. The Subie is still way overpriced ($3-4000 over msrp at many places), which eliminates it. I like the Evo (cruise control is available aftermarket), but I'm worried that I'll get tired of it fast due to its uninspiring looks and bland interior. The Evo would ostensibly be better than the RX-8 in winter, although it would need snow tires just as much as the Mazda. So, I'll do a few more test-drives and decide soon. Hopefully, I won't have my own case of buyer's remorse.

Nice to see such WRX love...

I'm glad you can present your argument in such a mature fashion ("wrx suX0rz")...

Anyway, Rubbermaid interior? I've sat in your RX-8 my friend, and that center console is cheesy. The WRX interior is fine, it's not luxury, nor should it be, and never was meant to be. My seats happen to be more supportive/comfortable than your 8's. Great ergronomics in my car as well.

Having said that, the 8 is a nice car and i like it, but it's not quite fast enough for me.
