I agree 110% with what Gord, Desmo, and Demon said. Start out small and then move on to bigger and faster bikes.
Get yourself a nice used bike. Learn how to ride and properly maintain it, and then move on to something else.
Oh, and for the sake of pete, invest in a GOOD helmet and riding gear (jacket, pants, boots and gloves - Condora or leather).
Have fun, but be safe.
