First Drive: 1978 Mazda RX-7 (Motor Trend)

not sure if this belongs here, but i thought it was worthy of a post.

also note:

Editor's Note: This year, Mazda celebrates its 90th anniversary and along with an extensive retrospective coming on May 20, we've gone through the archives to bring you a look at several classic Mazdas from the 70s and 80s.

So that should be interesting.

I really do want one of these early rx7s.... I just have no where to put it and the 8 is not going in the driveway or street.

I thought they were $9999 when they first came out. I really loved my 1982 GS. I didn't like the S1's with the front bumper sticking out.

I miss my old 1988 GXL. May have to try and find another FC.

A first gen would be nice! I'd love a 85 GSL-SE

FC's are fun. I have a 91 n/a. Someday I'd like a first gen too, but I don't have the money/time/space for one now.

I had one. While it had more HP than my 82 GS, it wasn't as much fun. It felt too heavy.

Right you are $9999, and good luck getting one for that price! I didn't have the money at the time so I bought a Fiat X1/9 for under $6000. Then in 1983 I bought an RX7. Faster than the Fiat, but not as much fun.

Thanks, I read the whole series, its interesting to read about the dramatic refinement and increase in performance between gen 1 and gen3. Makes me hope whatever the RX is, it will at least match the performance of the gen3 RX-7.

That car looked DAMN good for 1978. I was in 2nd grade, so I wasn't exactly keeping up with the automotive scene at the time. :P

Funny how back in 1978 they wanted to prove that the rotary engine configuration
can have "good gas mileage" and argued with the EPA rating.
