Ford Controls Mazda or?!?!?

Ok so does ford still own Mazda or? because i thought Mazda was like the Acura of Honda or Scion of Toyata... How much Mazda stock does Ford own now, because theres a article in wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda

On November 18 2008 Ford announced that it would be selling a 20% stake in Mazda bringing its stake to 13.4%, and surrendering control of the company. [7][8] The following day Mazda announced that, as part of the deal, it was buying back 6.8% of its shares from Ford.

Ok so now the Ford owns 13.4% of Mazda what does this mean? I mean i suppose this is a good thing because Ford quality isn't the best... but anyone have any idea who bought the rest of the stock or imput on this whether this is good for us, the 8 , or just Mazda in general...
thanks...

old news
ford lost its controlling share, but it never "owned" mazda
the relationship is still there though.

a variety of other companies bought the shares... i remember sumitomo and bridgestone IIRC, but there were more

I don't see how this helps at all. Ford has a history of rebuilding companies. Ford has sold off several viable companies as part of their own self-bailout like Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover. For Mazda, it means a reduction in investment while at the same time reducing shared platforms (costing more $) during a terrible auto market. Remember, at one time Mazda was at risk of going under altogether; Ford bailed them out in many ways.

Actually, the JDPower Initial Qaulity Survey puts Ford just behind Honda and well ahead of Mazda....

But knowing the huge amount of shared components, yeah, the two will continue to have a very strong relationship

Ford brought Mazda up from losing $$ to making a nice profit in just a few years not too long back

Yes, but because mazda it was great tech and bad marketing/commercial net.

Mazda can't survive alone, but its tech it's better than Ford tech in small/midsize cars.

In this wedding both partners have advantages.......

Ford will continue to have a strong relationship with Mazda for quite a while. All of Fords small car lineup is based on Mazda platforms, including some that are just coming out. Plus, they share a assembly plant in Flat Rock, MI.

At 33.4% Ford had controlling rights over Mazda under Japanese law (In excess of a third). This is no longer the case.

Now if we can only break free of the re-badged Ranger trucks (B series) that some dealers are unable to sell AT ALL .

and Consumer reports says that Ford is on par with Honda and Toyota with the quality increases coming in at all levels

http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2...ses_in_on.html

93 % of Fords line up (41/44) has a buy rating from Consumer Reports while Gm has less than 30% and Chrysler has 0. While Fords ratings have been going up Toyotas has been dropping

http://www.upi.com/Business_News/200...8411192592033/

3 Toyotas lost their buy rating including Camry

ford has gotten a bad rap in all of this, with a few exceptions, ford makes pretty good cars ... as does chevy, to be honest, especially in recent years with saturn. and dodge of course makes damn fine automobiles if you like that beefy vibe.

ford and chevy both have had the problem of consistently marketing to middle aged white male southerners though they've tried to curb that in the last 2 years or so, it seems. of course, now their problem will be a strange compulsion to make way too many slow *** ugly hybrids with knock offs of the toyota 2nd gen synergy drive inside. i hope they develop something new though.. i'm puling for them.

and regarding toyota, i'd say their quality has slipped over the years and they've been riding high approval ratings. i used to sell cars there, and now i own a 08xb (camry for kids) on lease for the wifey. Mine is always having some sort of issue. And the camry's were having transmission troubles in the 4cyl.

can't say much for honda. they've always seemed like the bastard kids of toyota and mazda to me. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

all that said, mazda is doing about as well as the rest of them with the exception of subaru and hyundaii, which are both doing better than expected. more ford stake or less wouldn't really make a difference at this point.

mazda should just stick to what they do best, putting out innovative and original drivers cars. they're not going anywhere.

Sorry, wasn't trying to thread crap, but I just felt it necessary to point it out... I'm a bit of a Ford fan as well, and hate to see domestics get unjustly ripped on as poor quality crap

Although I do wonder why an 8 owner is concerned about quality
