They can't lol they used their shares in mazda as collateral for a 25 billion dollar loan.....how in the heck does a company survive losing 34 million dollars a day?!? Maybe mazda should buy ford...lol

If mazda was sold I would love to see someone like BMW or VW pick it up. Its only natural since the wankel was a german design if im not mistaken. Maybe then we could get a turbo from the factory on 8's!

I guess some people think Mazda has become the real armpit of the auto industry with Ford in the mix. I hate to say it but Mazda has done no wrong as of late with Ford sitting in the back round.

If anything I kinda wish that Ford would help Mazda out a bit or more with letting them use the engine in the Mazda 6, Cx-7, Mazda 3 and so on. Let Mazda play with one of their V-8's. hehe... ok will never happen but still lol

While its true that Mazda needed Ford to survive Many years ago...today its another story..
Mazda is the only Brand under Fords wing that is holding its own, and is paying down some of its own debt.
James Packer is Australia's riches guy, he owns a DB9, his consortium could be the new owner of Aston Martin.

I really wanna see mazda as an independent company, it might not happen now as we're still too "attached" to Ford in many ways.

Go Texas Longhorns!
Being independent and small, even when ridiculously financially sucessful, is tough. Ask Porsche, BMW and Honda. Every product has to be a sucess, there is little margin for error financially.
why do you think nearly all automakers roll up to one of 6 companies? It can be a strength if played right. Ford pretty much lets Mazda do what it wants, people have this notion that the is a conspiracy by Ford to hold Mazda down, that Ford is the one preventing the RX7 coming back or the RX8's will always be slower than a Mustang.....this is bullshit. Mazda makes decisions for financial reasons...period.
Mazda's actions in the sport car market are similar to all the other companies that make sports cars as far as product acceptance. "All" the japanese automakers exited the sportscar market in the mid 1990's, not just Mazda. and all of them brought them back at the same time.
Ford has done nothing but good for Mazda, let us hope that continues.

Could not have said it better Brillo.....
Considering Mazda's size, over the last 5 years it has done extremely well...
They have exported 4 high performance vehicles/sports cars...MX5,RX8, 3 and 6 Mazdaspeed.
The reality is that all of these are only a niche small market with limited growth.
Mazda have to continue to make "bread and butter" high volume models.
I think they have a good balance now with the CX-7 and 9 and Mazda 5.
I hope they continue their success and maintain a quality product out of Japan.
I doubt we will see it, however, I see a niche market that Mazda are reluctant to fill, and that's a small RENESIS powered lightweight and cheap convertible coupe.

Mazda is no smaller that Subaru so they could stand on their own. They could also enter into strategic partnerships as needed to expand. It's a moot point as the earliest it could happen is 2010 and that only if Ford files chapter 11 which while possible is not probable.

like mentioned earlier,
There are some rich Chinese companies, some state owned, with super deep pockets and tendency to overspend that are just itching to buy into an established brand to help them break into American and European markets. :p

Subaru is the vehicle arm of a much much larger company than Mazda..
Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) make a variety of hardware..including shipping.
I recall that GM have some shares in Fuji...aka Subaru

Subaru also makes heavy equipment machinery under the Fuji Heavy Industries moniker. Same as Hyundia/Kia. And Mitsubishi would be out of business if it wasn't for all the stuff they make- turbos, basically all sensors in every car, and a lot of ECUs. Plus heavy machinery.
Mazda's lineup is way too small to stand on it's own. It only makes cars and nothing else. It only tops Izuzu for Asian sales in America.
I love Mazda probably more than the next guy- but they just don't have the legs to stand on their own.

Well, it looks like Louis Vuitton is the high bidder. Aston boomed since Ford owned it, I would guess being owned by a large auto maker you get a lot of trickle down R&D. Now I'm affraid that Aston's interiors and matching handbags will be their highlight.
