Found my new SUV
Just finishd up my homework on available SUV's. I found everything i'm looking for in the newly redesigned Nissan Xterra.
The new Xterra is quite an improvement over the original - finally got rid of that butt-f@*! jeep wanna-be front end and the power department has grown immensly. not including the base I-4 of the original Xterra the base 3.3V6 was upgraded to a 4.0V6 derived from the 350Z V6 - it's basically a stroked version of that same motor. and now has an adapted version of the Z's 6spd tranny. power is up from 180/205 hp/tq to 265/285 hp/tq as the BASE engine!
i wanted leather but i can sacrifice the luxury for well wearing cloth any day. I currently drive an 01 ford ranger and i just test drove a new frontier and it put the ranger to absolute shame. i was also considering the toyota 4runner but i feel more comfortable punishing an Xterra in the ways i expect to rather than a nicer 4runner.
I do live a pretty active lifestyle and i need the versatility of something like the Xterra or the 4Runner - the only thing offered in that price range by toyota is the RAV4 and i wouldn't be caught dead in one of those!
thanks for the help and the insights guys.
yes, we're keeping the 8 - that car is a lifer! the ranger is getting traded and the Xterra will be joining the herd in a month or two.

a few reservations
Doesn't that thing still have leaf springs and a solid axle.
Doesn't the VQ40 take premium fuel? or at least mid-grade 270 hp 291 ft-lbs in the pathfinder, 265 hp & 284 ft-lbs. could be a more restrictive exhaust going around the axle.
I wish it had four wheel drive. that would be handy and a 6 speed automatic (6:1 gear ratio coverage) because the 5 speed automatic doesn't have that big of a ratio spread 4.5:1.
Oh those dual beam headlights just suck.
Tell the dealer you will take it at invoice.
