With regard to the topic, I would like to state that I feel there are many factors involved in handling. For example, if someone here were to talk specifically about one factor, I would then allude to a host of other factors so that this thread can be prolonged and belabored.
I will pretend I do not understand what others are talking about and also pretend that others for some reason do not understand that there are multiple factors to handling. I pledge to not only confuse others but to also confuse myself.

The 135i is what, like $10k-$15k more than the RX-8 for similarly-equipped models? Why don't they see how it compares to a car that actually costs the same, like the 120i.

$10k to $15k can get you a whole lot of improvements on the RX-8. Turbo or supercharger, struts, shocks, brakes, etc... by the time you were done the modified RX-8 could "slap" the 135i.
Better to compare equal price cars to each other.

No offense to the RX-8 but, in this country, I see the 135i crushing the RX-8 in every catagory except price and maybe styling which is subjective considering how different the styling is.
I hope the 1-series catches on in the US market cause I really think it's a valuable package all together. I would drive the 5-door too cause something about it's awkward styling appeals to me. Plus the fact that it is a RWD hatch!
Anyone catch the 5th Gear where they were comparing the VW R32 to the 130? It got my blood pumping...

Made me want that BMW immediately but with the 3.0 TT even though I think the R32 won out right.

The only reason I can think of for comparing these two cars is because there aren't a whole lot of other cars to compare the 135i to in that very broad price range. Similarly equipped the 135i should cost at least $10k more than the RX-8, so if it doesn't crush it I'd be surprised.
Really I think a more fair comparison would be a sport package equipped 128i versus the RX-8. Both weigh closer to the same, both have similar engine output, and both cost about the same.
Overall I'm sure the 135i will be a much nicer car than the RX-8. But this is to be expected.
JRichter, I'm watching that video and it's nice to see that it looks like VW finally figured out how to build an AWD performance car that doesn't suck...

I actually really, really like the 135i a lot - much more so than any other BMW, with the possible exception of the M3 (I say possible because the M3 is mad expensive, and they've really ruined the formerly excellent steering feel).
The 135i is the most successful execution of BMWs new design trend, and by a wide margin (the 7 series is fugly by comparison). It has a clean and attractive interior layout. And it seems well built.
But here's the problem - as with most BMWs, the price is so much higher than what you can get for a LOT less from the competition. BMW just seems to want to command too much a premium for their vehicle. The strong euro doesn't help either.
If BMW charged a 10% to 15% premium to a comparable vehicle, I could see it, and maybe somehow rationalize it. But we're talking about a MASSIVE premium.
I priced out a 135i, with just the premium package as an option, and it came to $42,545 without TTL. And you know that there's little if any room to negotiate that down.
That's a pretty hefty price for this class of car.

I think the 135 is kind of wierd looking, and being barely lighter than the 335 id take the 3 any day. The 335 actually has a lot of things standard, such as sun roof, premium sound, HID etc. I went to the dealership a few months ago and priced out one I want by adding sports package and leather and it came out to 43k. Not too bad.

Imagine the Hulk got real pissed at BMW due to costly maintenance and proceeded to the 3-series plant. Then he went all green at the 335i and crumpled it before BMW offered to pick up the maintenance tab. The end result is Hulk calmed down to Bruce Banner and you have a new 1-series.

After living in germany for a couple of years Ive come to realize that BMW and Mercedes styling is quite bland and dispassionate, the RX8 styling really catches the eyes and is something special, and very rare in europe all the girls always love it

It'll will be $40k-$41k to get a 135 comparably equipped to an RX-8 GT. I think it is a reasonable comparison, but the BMW is going to be pricey to the point where it pushed some RX-8 drivers out of the race because of price.

I would take the 135i over an 8, even an upgraded 8 any day. The 135i ran a 4.7 0-60. I am not so sure even a modded 8 could battle that. Clarkson, whom we over here in 8 land love so much, said the 135 was BMW's best car. That even beats out the almighty M3. With added BMW performance (intake, exhaust, suspension), and a slight tune (handheld tuner), you are looking at an M3 beater.
This is the whole reason why I am disgruntle with Mazda right not. I want to stay in a rotary, but I want a real sports car rotary with performance like the BMW Performance 135i. Of course the baby bimmer will cost more, but (1) I like the looks, (2) I like the power stock, not to mention tuning it some, (3) It's a Bimmer!! and, (4) Let's face it, you will see less of these on the street than even our 8 as BMW is reducing the quantity of their shipments. That equals =

The 135i supposedly beat the Cayman too in 5th Gear. But I'd still pick the Cayman as the more balanced car. There's more to life than 0-60 and 1/4.... otherwise I'd be in some sort of MustangandMullet.com forum.

There is more to life than a 0-60. The 1 also tears up winding roads... It is not just a straight line car. I think in the Cayman comparo it also beat it in the salom did it not. Hmmm. There it is...
I love my 8, but facts are facts. BMW has something VERY special with the 1. Rotary sports cars main advantage was the handling. The 1 is dangerously close to if not better than the 8. Mazda needs to wow the market and man up now. The 8 in its current form (even with a 16x) cannot compare.

As for the Cayman it is a beautiful car and I would take it over the 135 any day. The 135 looks ugly and it perform well but really you are paying for it with over inflated BMW prices. I doubt this product will hit the NA market though....
