ya dude.... go for the vette. Don't worry about the '8, if you miss it, I guarantee you can drive up to any person driving an 8 and offer to swap for a few hours. No way they'll refuse.

I saw the new Z06 at the LA Autoshow this year, & I have to admit that it was pretty damn impressive. Where the "regular" Corvette interior left me unimpressed, the Z06's is much better. Also the form is much better with the regular "coupe" design vs. the previous versions nasty "hardtop" configuration (looks ungainly chopped). I would wait for the 2nd year as usually the first year the dealers are trying to rape the poor suckers who have to have the latest & greatest (at least out here they do) & usually by the 2nd/3rd year of most Corvette runs they are offering massive discounts.

if you can afford it by all means go for it, insurance is going to be a killer but it would be worth it, the new Z06 is getting numbers right up there with cars triple its price and the new design is absolutely stunning. That is one remarkable car, you won't be disappointed. (it even has carbon fiber fenders! hard to believe this is the same car company that built the assstek)
edit: an ls7 in an 8 isn't even practical, way to big and it would tweak the balance something awful, now an ls1 in a 3rd gen? that would probably work

and besides..that LS7 is FREAKIN HUGE...i really doubt it would fit.
and if it did..it'd probably twist the 8 into a pretzel when gunned hard.

The LS2 is a good candidate for the RX8 cuz it's slightly more compact than the LS1 and made for drive by wire. It'd still be a very expensive modification (LS6 in an RX7 costs 11k+ to do right).
I was thinking about getting a vette myself. It's hard not to want a Z06 though if you are looking at a vette and that'd just be way too much to spend every month.
