GF Called, Hit Curb, Advice?
Hey guys, your guess will be as good as mine here since she just sent me a text and gave me a call. She drives a Subie Impreza and I guess she got cut off and freaked out and managed to rash up against a curb. Looks like some good curb rash but from the pic I dont see any harsh bending. The part that worries me is that she took a good chunk of the tire out. I asked her the depth and she responded with "Like 3 pennies deep, I can see some threading".
Luckily she's near a firestone so she is going to get some information on damage.
Question is : 1. anyone know a good place near Hartford CT that can repair a rim thats been rashed up? Is it not even worth it?
2. Shes got a little more than 50K on the odo and does heavy daily driving for work (about 20k a year), never changed tires. I am hoping they can just patch up the tire, but I assume they will tell her she needs a new set regardless. Sound about right?

Bah Update:
Def not a patch job, shes got to get all 4 replaced which I figured since its AWD. Guy told her she doesn't have to get it replaced now but it may start leaking eventually. Comes to about 475 for a set of Firestone HR's (buy 3 get 1 free BS deal).

If the thread is showing in a tire cut, dump it; that is a dangerous gamble otherwise. If it's not, I'd keep it unless it started to show leakage.
For wheel repair try alloy wheel repair specialists: http://www.awrswheelrepair.com/usa_c...nnecticut.html
I went to a new location in Danbury which while was a very small place that was newly opened, I had them fix 2 newly bent Forgestar rims I bought 2 weeks earlier due to a mishap. They made a clean cut where a crack was and re-weld it ; last time I checked weld was still going strong at end of the year 10k miles later. As for cleaning up the rim lip from brushing with the curb, looking at the pics on their website it seems they should be able to do a good job.
I actually need to take one rim back to them again after brushing mine on a curb as well near the end of the year. After being satisfied with their 1st repair job, I'll be going back to see how they do with repairing the lip.

Not sure how hard she hit the curb but you might want to make sure she didn't bend anything else. Although I assume once she has the tires repaired and gets it up to speed the vibration would let you know about that. I know to many people with bent control arms from similar accidents.

When replacing wheels theres a couple rules that must at all times be followed:
Rule 1: RWD vehicles - Must replace tires two at a time to prevent damage to the locking diff
Rule 2: AWD vehicles - Center differential will be damaged if all 4 tires are not replaced at once
Rule 3: Most curb rash can be ignored and just needs a rebalance
Rule 4: Alignment after your hit curbs that hard or get new tires
Rule 5: Wheels need to be re balanced after two weeks of driving, the Tires will slip on the wheel from the grease, until the grease hardens and becomes more like a glue.

Rule 6: Defensive driving + not freaking out.
Could be worse.. Like $700 for a set of Falken Ziex 912s..
Had to get cuz the last set had mismatched tires and one had a chunk missing from it and another was completely bald on half the tire
oh, and it could have been your RX8
