But the automaker's earlier report on 2008 annual and December monthly sales told a different story. Honda sold just 72 S2000s in December 2008 versus 210 in December 2007. Honda said it sold a total of 2,538 S2000s in 2008 versus 4,302 in 2007, a decline of 41.2 percent.
Gee, I though US RX-8 Sales were poor at 350 (approx) per month (2008)

And yes, I don't like to see the S2000 go, it is and was a great piece of Japanese Engineering like the RX-8.
In a small way this could help MX-5/ Miata sales, now the only Roadster out of Japan.

so does this mean goodbye to the whole car concept? or this generation? I hope they come out with another car like the s2000. I honestly sometimes feel like I would like to trade for an s2000 but most the time I'm absolutely in love with my 8.
Either way, the s2000 is a great car in my opinion... always did like them.

It will be missed, truly a engineering marvel from Honda. Until we meet again in another 20 -30 years. 1968-S800 ,1999-S2000, 2020=S????
A car that will be truly missed but never forgotten by enthusiast.

A damn shame.
Honda will officially turn into Toyota II the instant the last S2000 rolls off the line. Actually, that's not fair. Toyota still has quite a few RWD cars in their portfolio...

welll, toyota is gonna be bringing out a new supra but other than that the only race inspired engineering they have done is the scion line...which by no means is impressive

"race inspired"? scion?
and unfortunately, i think the both new supra and that lexus supercar are dead. along with the supposed new nsx, and definitely the supposed new s2k. like someone else said, honda is totally turning into toyota II, or toyota jr. good or bad? eh. the s2k was created to celebrate honda's 50th birthday, and i don't think they ever really expected it to last very long. that it stuck around this long ain't too bad. that they're axing all these sports cars is pretty disheartening, and to me signals death of honda as i knew it. rip

I truly never thought the S2000 would reach depreciation levels like it has, but I say THANK GOD, they are finally stopping production. Long overdue, but for potential S2000 buyers, this is a golden oppurtunity, because it's flashing be back to 2005, when the RX8 was being unloaded for insane prices.
Hopefully things will level off, and this car can maintain a decent value in the future.
Truly ashame Honda didn't stop this production a couple years sooner, as they are being unloaded used for insane prices. It is what it is, and it looks like I'll be keeing my S for quite a few more years.

What the NY Times had to say, perhaps relevant to all sports cars:
"It was designed and built for pure fun by a company known for its common sense — 1999 was still the giddy beginnings of the Internet age. The Nasdaq was riding high, music was free, Apple sold its first iBook, Kobe still liked Shaq — and the S2000 fit right in. Honda sold more than 110,000 S2000s (and more than 65,000 in the United States).
But now the fun and games have come to an end. The era of rising stock markets and real estate has been replaced by a deep and dark recession. So in many ways it is fitting that Honda has decided to end sales of the car that symbolized the carefree attitude of the past 10 years."

I think there were more people buying an F430 than S2000 in Canada last year.
"Honda said it will end production of its sporty roadster, the S2000, this year, with 2009 as the final model year. Introduced in 1999 as a 2000 model-year car, about 110,000 S2000s were sold world wide. Only 65 were sold in Canada last year, down from 123 in 2007"

I understand sales are down, but did they do anything to freshen it up? Anything to attract new buyers?
I am guessing that these cars are not profitable enough to keep R&D up so they can offer the next generation? Would that assumption be correct?

^ What R&D? S2000 has been around since Y2K. All tooling costs should now be paid up. Honda should really update the interior specifically that KITT look alike dashboard. Too 80s. Other than that, drop the price. Because it MSRPs at $50,000 in Canada. Talk about $$$ for a little convertible. Fast 'n Furious insurance rate also put a dent in its appeal to young 'uns.

I honestly do think it was a good thing that they are finally bringing it to an end. Don't get me wrong, I love the car... as I mentioned earlier, I've thought/am thinking about trading if I find a good deal. The thing that saddens me, is the fact that it's not being replaced. If they announced the end of this model and the start of a new one coming, then it would have been good news. It really is as others have mentioned, the death of the last interesting car from honda.
