yeah, those ones suck. had one this morning. i currently carpool in a 2 door cav, and we passed some guy in a dodge ram (the daytona version), his headlights were higher than the roofline. apparently, he didnt like this, so proceeded to ride our *** the rest of the way. the driver i was with was starting to get really nervous because we werent even sure he could see us in front of him anymore. if we had to stop fast for whatever reason, he would have literaly driven right over us.

I guess the ability to stop before you hit something or get out of the way before something hits you is over-rated?
Better brakes means going to the corner faster longer. Bad brakes me hitting the tires or sand pit. I suppose when you have bad brakes you need a big truck to survive the impact and get out of the sand?

I know this thread is old...
But as one of those "rednecks" with a big diesel with good HP,
I cracked up @ this thread.
I'd just like to say... don't judge us all by a few. There are a few of who just enjoy having a big truck that can go anywhere, carry lots of people, haul a few tons of chit, outrun stock Vettes, and get better fuel mileage than most 8's.
I wouldn't call a high hp truck useless. Unless you think your 8 is useless...
And for the record, a 3/4 ton truck running empty generally doesn't need to upgrade brakes because ours are high quality from the factory.... Made to stop large loads.
One last correction.
A Superduty with nothing but a chip won't come NEAR 1000 hp.
So far, noone has broken 900 in a PowerStroke.
Best yet is 871...
And that's a 10 sec. 4x4....
Not *******. I love my 8 and it definately has it's niche. I just wanted to clarify.
Anyone that's interested in more can PM me...

I used to laugh at trucks like that till I saw one run a low 11 second run in the 1/4 mile. I shut up after that.
Sadly the drivers do think they are in a sports car. I had a huge dodge ram race me on an on-ramp and he whooped me badly till we got to the turning part. My RX8 shrugged the turn off at a very fast speed while the truck driver struggled to keep from putting himself into the wall.

Seems kinda stupid to me, giant truck, high center of gravity, and lets make it really fast. Oh, with stock brakes. Great f'n idea.
I hate that SUV makers are advertising these big vehicles to be fast, the new land rover, the X5, the dodge SRT truck, the Jeep SRT that they are coming out with. Just gives the driver more reason to ride my *** on the freeway. To me, it is very irresponsible on the part of the auto makers.
My two bits.

Yeah. There's some idiots out there for sure running around with more horsepower than they need.
I'm guilty. I had mine up to 120 on 38" tires last month...
Not a good idea, but I wasn't around anyone, and it was really late.

To me, the beauty of the RX8 isn't in going fast, or anything like that. The reason I love my car is because I just effing love driving it. It just feels so good.
Anymore, every car out there is fast. You can buy a 300 HP Accord for pete's sake.
I will vouch that many of those trucks have extremely powerful brakes. But in the end, if you DO hit someone in a truck, you're carrying twice as much momentum into impact as you would with a smaller car. It makes me nervous when I pull up at stop lights next to those giant SUVs and I notice that they're headlights are about level with my forehead. Then I notice the woman driving it is also talking on the phone and putting on her makeup in the mirror. That's when fast IS important so I can GTFOD lol

lol this is one entertaining thread. Just about a week ago I was on the 101 over here in phx going 70 (5mph over) when one of these bad boys passed me up going like 85-90 then proceeding to do the smoke thing with those huge pipes coming out of the bed. It reminded me of all the civics and ricers that pass people up who aren't racing then proceed to put on the hazards.

I bet it looks pretty sweet doing 140mph rollovers down the interstate.
Also, they drive me crazy because when I'm waiting for a package, I always think the UPS/FedEx truck is here.

Fast trucks serve some purpose. Its for the mid-life crises guy who can't get his truck any bigger so he decides to hot-rod it. Can't stand them. I see a giant *** truck with a 5'' lift and huge mud tires (body is crystal clean time and time again so I doubt he actually offroads it) all the time. Sometimes I just want to run up to him and ask "dude is it really that small?"

Mid life crisis? I'm 24...
You can hate all you want... but in the end, mines faster... and I still have an RX8...

Who cares how fast these trucks go. Have them get on any mountain back road (here in the NE would be anywhere in West Virginia) and see them fall off the mountain rolling their fat trucks over trying to keep up with the nifty RX-8 on those super curvy roads.
Without curves - RX-8 drives not much faster than your typical car.
With curves - RX-8 RULES THE ROAD (except maybe for a mini which also hugs curves because it sits on a perfectly square balanced set of wheels, but they look real dinky)
Hey, many of the those superduty SUVs will be in the graveyard in 5 years due to:
$7 per gallon gas price
4x4 abuse
rollowers (I cannot count how many accidents I've seen with a rollover SUV/truck)
etc. etc. etc.
The RX-8's rotary can be modifed to handle biofuel and/or natural gas/hydrogen (they have done both succesfully in Japan)

In the end, it all comes down to personal preference. Everyone who has an RX8 is at least a little bit weird. Some people like to have cars that are outrageously fast in a straight line. Some people like slow cars with giant subs that light up like a Roppongi disco. Some people like rotaries even though you can get 300 HP in an Accord nowadays. And some people like giant trucks on huge lifts with monster tires.
When you get right down to it, it only matters what makes YOU happy, because if you're worried about what everyone else thinks, you're catering to a general public that is 98% morons. I know there's lots of cars out there much faster than mine, but in the end, I just don't care.

I agree with you 100%. There's lots of bad things that can be said about 8's and 90% of their owners. It's all personal preferance.
Why would it?

who wouldn't want a vehicle that despite weighing 6,000lbs can beat most cars in a straight line while towing a yacht (and then run said car over afterward w/o a problem)? lol
I wouldn't, but still thats an impressive vehicle

I was gonna let this go... but it bugs me...
How exactly is a diesel a "global warming truck", when PER GALLON OF FUEL, it will go farther than an 8. The "smoke" you usually see is nothing but soot.
Soot does not contribute to "global warming".
Man-made global warming is a hoax anyway.

I have a couple of co-workers that have them. One is hooked up to propane, which apparently is like hooking up nitrous in a car.. One of our regional managers just got Shelby GT 500 and has been struting around the office like a peacock. I guess he's been street-racing and bragging about who he's beaten and such. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Mustangs..the GT 500 especially..but this dude,...
Anyway, he's bragging about beaten all these folk...so my co-worker with the jacked-up Ford Diesel overheard him. They decided to head out to a track somewhere and race.. well.. it's been 2 weeks and we haven't heard NOT ONE PEEP outta Mr. My Car Is Fasta Than Yours. He's so obnoxious about everything, that EVERYONE has noticed his silence. It's nice. Really nice. So, 2 thumps up to the jacked up Ford Diesel with Propane.

This is definately and interesting topic.
I also own a chevy avalanche, while it is probably almost as fast as my 8 off the line, the stopping power is no were near my 8. The wife reminds me everytime I drive it that I am not in my sports car, as I complain about the lack of breaking power. When I bought it the salesman even bragged about what great stopping power the truck had.
I have debated on doing some mods to the truck, but before I do anything I'll upgrade the breaks.
For the cost of that Shelby GT 500 you can buy an 8, mod it, and likely smoke him. I had a Mustang GT, and while it was fast, the rear end has a tendacy to break loose really easy. I hated driving that car in the rain.
