Had some fun at a Miata meet...
I'm eating lunch today with a buddy and we noticed a Miata owners meet in the parking lot across the street. It was a pretty good turnout. Maybe 30 or 40 cars. It was also the most entertaining thing I've ever seen. Mostly it was late 50's/early 60's couples. Occasionally a father and son would pull up. There were three Miatas that showed up at the same time, driving in formation, piloted by extremely gay men. Two of the drivers had their "life partner" riding shotgun. We couldn't resist. We walked over and decided to make some Miata friends. It quickly became apparent that 95% of these people didn't know a spark plug from a butt plug...
Me to the event organizer: So where's the petition to rename this the "MX-5" club?
Her: ? followed by a ? and a ?
Me to a group of older guys looking under the hood of a Mazdaspeed Miata: Do these turbocharged Miatas run 35lbs or 40lbs of boost?
Them: The fronts are usually at 35psi and the backs are best at about 36 or 37psi.
Me: Oh no I meant the turbocharger?
Them: These are gas powered, not diesel son. (looking at each other like I was the moron)
Me to a gay couple taking pictures next to their car with their pillow biting friends: I love how fast these cars are. Do they have a V8?
Them: No no. Just a V6 but it's a pretty powerful one.
Me: Oh OK, maybe that's why there's no power steering.
Them: That could be it. Yeah I think that's why.
It was fun. Everybody was really friendly and totally oblivious. I felt like the Tom Green of car forums. The highlight of the event was, ironically, that the most intelligent Miata person was a 11 or 12 year old kid who busted my friend. My buddy asked his dad/grandpa how much horsepower the motor is that retracts the convertible top and the kid jumped all over him. He said "electricity is measured in watts, not horsepower. Plus you have to do it by hand, so it takes one manpower to put the top down". Smart little kid.
