Hand Pump Oil Extractor thoughts...

I've purchased 2 or 3 different oil containers to transport my used oil, but they've leaked, so I cannot take them in my car safely. Then I found this..

Just wondering if you guys think it's a good investment. I wonder if it gets more oil from the cooler lines as well?

In short, do you think it's worth the pricetag?

Very popular on the Mercedes forums.

Probably won't get oil out of the coolers (don't see how it could) and sucks thru the dipstick hole.

More of a 'sucker' than a transporter, but won't leak.....

Ya, I didn't see how it would get any from the cooler, just a wish I suppose :P

What means do you guys use to transport oil? I'm probably just looking at the wrong thing D:

*EDIT* what about metal shavings...? Wouldn't those just sit in the bottom of the pan causing issues?

I use something similar, a Mitivac MV7400 and I would never go back to changing oil any other way. And it does get more oil out than doing it the normal way. I usually get out about 4.5-5.0 quarts. As far as transporting, well I have a closed lid 2 gallon container that I empty the mitivac into and then just take the 2 gallon container to autozone and empty it. The whole process is very clean, I love it.

Edit: I also use my race jack to jack up the passenger side a bit and that allows the mitivac to get out a little bit more.

+1 I also have something similar and absolutely love it. I would never go back to the conventional method of changing oil.

Humor me this. I use the exact same model as the one above, and like the others, i would never go back. I originally purchased it to make outside oil changes in winter a breeze, but it turns out to be a full fledged oil change right through the hood. AWESOME!

Did you guys ever pull the drain plug on the pan to double check first time around that it actually did remove everything i.e. all the crude, shavings, etc?

I change my oil every 3k and get it tested, there is no crud in my pan. There is never a chance really from crud to settle in the pan and my oil tests would show if metal shavings were an issue. But I do have SCSI hard drive magnets on the pan.

Just making sure, you put the magnets on the outside of the pan, right?

After draining the oil the normal way, I pulled the pan to put in the Mazmart OP mod. It was amazing how much oil was left in the pan, at least 1 quart. An oil change thru the plug is only draining ~3.5 qts of 5.7 or ~60% comes out. Getting 4.5 qts out increases the percentage to 79%.

The crud's gonna stay in the ~1 qt that remains in the pan after a normal oil change anyway.

Yeah they are curved so they fit perfect right around the drain plug.

Exactly, and when I installed my Mazmart kit my pan was really clean as I thought it would be. A good paper filter goes a long way.

Well, I think I'm going to duplicate 9k's setup. I can get the same pump/container for just under $100. Doesn't seem too bad for insane convenience.

just make sure you follow the directions about cleaning the extractor after use. I was looking at getting this but "oil sprayed everywhere" comes up a lot when reading reviews.

Cleaning seems to keep this from happening. Also, they do have a list of oils that can cause issues with their equipment so make sure your oil isnt listed... mostly synthetic.

I got one of these, from an ebay vendor, It was a buy it now for like $40, I think I offered $35.

I use a 5 gal gas can for oil. Works fine.

The pump is grand, oil, atf, brake flush (Expedition is a freaking QUART of brake fluid, imagine pumping that out by hand).....

Also, FTW, you can clean it and use it to put oil in, like for the dif or the trans. Piece of cake. Did take a bit to run the trans oil through the little hose. Next time I will use a big hose on both ends.

For an oil change I pump the oil (almost 4 quarts) add to the minimum line, run it for a bit, pump again and change the filter. Not getting under the car is grand. Oil is pretty clean after a double flush. I store the thing in an old oil drain pan on a piece of cardboard to soak up any oil. One of these is going to be part of the Next $100 Thread.

Yeah I think I need to try one of these... Scott, where did you get those magnets? Link? Im gonna get some, I was always angry Mazda didnt install a magnetic drain plug.

Only thing is I have the Fumoto oil drain valve, its already pretty easy to drain oil lol, but if this gets all or most of the oil out then I will consider this haha

I just ripped apart some old SCSI hard drive I had laying around. Remind me and I'll give you some ate the statewide meet. The Fumoto valve has always scared me, if it were to fail............. It's pretty unprotected.

Sorry, I don't mean to thread jack but I have a question about this method. If I put a magnet by my drain plug, or use a magnetic drain plug, would it be best to first release the drain plug to flush out all of the crap that would collect by it, then to use the pump to get out as much oil as possible? Or just use the pump to suck up everything?

The particles, if any will stay on the magnet. You could remove them if you have a madnetic drain plug.
